100 years young
Last week I photographed MacCene Grimmett for our Life & Style section. Grimmett, who turns 100 next month, was the accompanist for a local women’s chorus for more than 40 years, starting in 1946. She was a treat to work with, sitting and standing for a variety of different photos I wanted to try in her wonderfully wood-paneled, single-story brick home in Provo. It is amazing to think of everything she has seen in her life and how dramatically the world has changed. She was 32 years old when the second World War ended, in her 50s during the civil rights movement, and 75 when I was born (these being the more important milestones of the 20th century, of course). Last week she delighted in telling me how wonderful it is that her iPad can take a photograph and develop it right in front of her eyes. MacCene was not camera shy in the least and was thrilled to see the results on the back of my camera (a preview I rarely afford subjects less enjoyable to work with). Happy with the photos on my camera, I left MacCene’s home with a big smile on my face. I wish all portrait shoots could go that well.
