The Distinguished Utahn of the Year Award program will honor R. Lane Beattie, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Location: Little America Hotel, Grand Ballroom, 500 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City. Time: 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Reception starts at 6 p.m. Cost: $50 per person. Corporate sponsorships at $2,500 for a table of 10 guests. Proceeds will go to the chapters’ scholarship funds.

THURSDAY

The Small Business Development Center in Orem will start a three-session Strategic Business Planning course taught by Curt Porritt. For those who have just started a business or have been in business for a while, this nine-hour course will help you to develop a strategic marketing plan to capture your customers’ attention and communicate your products’ benefits to them. Porritt began his career at WorkPerfect/Novell where he shipped products worldwide, after which he became a globalization consultant for five years. He then joined Caldera where he oversaw corporate strategy. Porritt later became president and CEO of 10x Marketing and is currently senior vice president of marketing at Master Control Inc. and is an independent consultant for many small companies. Cost: $75 includes nine hours of instruction (three weekly sessions), the workbook and coaching sessions. The Utah Solar Energy Association, a branch of the American Solar Energy Society, will host a meeting on “Solar 101: A Primer on Solar Power and Thermal.” Presentations on both solar electricity and solar hot water will be offered to solar enthusiasts. The Salt Lake City law firm of Parsons Behle & Latimer will present its 19th Annual Employment Law Seminar. The seminar will highlight recent developments in employment law including immigration worksite enforcement, trade secrets, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, workers’ compensation, wage and hour issues, workplace privacy, employee benefits and religion in the workplace. The speakers include: Elisabeth Blattner-Thompson, Stefan Brutsch, Jeff Droubay, Mark Gavre, Christina Schmutz, Bill Stilling, Roger Tsai and Chris Wangsgard. SATURDAY

ZYTO Corp., an Orem provider of computerized bio-technology equipment and software, will hold its annual shareholders meeting to elect five directors for its board. They include: Vaughn R Cook, OMD, president/CEO of ZYTO and founder; Dennis A. Robbins, an advisor to the President’s Commission on Ethical Issues in Biomedicine, Biomedical and Behavioral Research; Marc Leib, an attorney and physician with experience dealing with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, health care antitrust matters, and Food and Drug Administration oversight of medical devices.

The other two directors include: Goodwin Wang, who founded SES Investment in Shanghai, China, and has assisted Fortune 500 companies in launching in China. Duane Davis, vice president of sales for ZYTO, has worked in the alternative medical field and educated healthcare practitioners in the use of energy technologies.
