The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage get a trunk in the new G4
This week we had the opportunity to check out the newest car from the world of Mitsubishi in the form of the Mirage G4, which now is available with a trunk, instead of just with a hatchback. The folks Mitsubishi having discovered that not everyone is interested in a hatchback and have now designed and produced the G4 Mirage sedan.
We did have to wonder why Mitsubishi decided to add the G4 to the name, it originally sounded like some awkward designation the army or CIA might use. It does however stand for Global 4 door and worked for us in the new Mirage with a trunk, however be aware that storage space goes to 12.3 cubic feet from the hatchbacks 17.2 cubes. We had to agree with the logic as it takes a special type of person to enjoy having a hatchback, having owned one for 6 years you either really like it or you don’t.
Of course the Mirage G4 is an entry level sedan that includes completion like unto the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa and Chevy Spark, given with that much competition in the market; it is going to take something different to set the Mirage apart from the pack.
Since we would not expect any of these different vehicles to come standard with any type of luxury extras, the choice would defiantly come down to the extra features that were included to make the ride better and more importantly be less money and last longer.
To that end Mitsubishi has included with all their vehicles one of the best warrantees in the business with a 10 year 100,000 mile limited powertrain deal. The rest of the competition pretty much cuts theirs off at 5 years or 60,000 miles, showing that the engineers believe in their product and are going to back it up for a much longer haul.
In the mileage department after giving the G4 a workout that included a good combination of highway and city travel by adding over 400 miles to the odometer we came out with a 39.9 mile per gallon average.
At the start of the week with the Mirage we had a decent amount of snow that turned to slush and eventually melted after a couple of rain storms and unusually warm weather for January we did get to give the G4 a good workout in the snow and lots of standing water on the roads.
Craig did have some worries the first day as we still had a good amount of slush on the road in front of our home and getting into the driveway would originally seemed to have been too much for the vehicle and we would get stuck without a doubt. Of course he was wrong as usual as the Mirage made its way through the muck without any issues. It continued to perform quite well in the winter weather throughout the week.
Although being that the vehicle does only weigh in at 2200 pounds there were a couple of times in high winds that it was a little difficult to stay centered in the lane as the little G4 would get pushed around a bit by the wind. And on a couple of occasions going through really large amounts of standing water it would float through because of the light weight.
Moving those 2200 pounds was accomplished by a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder engine that produces right around 78 horsepower and is connect to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. So this is definitely not going to win any races out on the road but it did hang in there running around town even out on the freeway. It may take longer to get to 70 mph but it did get there and got us where we needed to go.
Friday night just after we made the switch for the G4 we took a trip to Costco and pretty much filled the trunk with stuff we had gotten most of which will last us at least a year, so for the two of us it proved to be more than adequate as an everyday driver.
For a starter car the Mirage was loaded with many great features that we would not have expected to be included in the sedan. First off there was an included 6.5 inch touchscreen as the center point in the dash that controlled the radio and Bluetooth phone functions. Yes there was Bluetooth with voice activation to use a smartphone.
It also had Apple Carplay and Android Auto included that could be hooked up through the USB port in the glove compartment, after we accomplished this it automatically used the Carplay app on our iPhones slick and easy.
We now had instant and access to any of the functions on our phones, the least of which being Siri to help us with any need. Hands free texting and text reading easy, IHeart Radio no problem, navigation no problem, and best of all it displayed all the information on the screen. Now we had pretty much every feature we could have wanted from even a much more expensive vehicle.
The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage is the perfect starter car for anyone and yet would still be a great idea for a commuter vehicle especially with the almost 40 miles per gallon that we achieved for the week of driving in the snow, on the highway and also all around the city.
The warranty is one of the best around with a 5 year 60,000 mile new vehicle limited warranty and better than that 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty, value wise the Mirage adds up to become a great investment for the money.
