Daily Herald takes home 15 awards, more than half in photojournalism, from state SPJ contest

The Daily Herald won 15 awards Wednesday evening, announced at the annual 2019 Utah Headliners Society of Professional Journalist awards banquet in Salt Lake City.

Of the 15 awards, eight went to Daily Herald photojournalists Isaac Hale and Evan Cobb.

Hale won second place for “best photographer” with his portfolio, as well as third place for a general news photo, second and third place for photo essays, second place for a sports feature photo and first place for a sports action photo of mutton busting.

Cobb won second place for a breaking news photo and honorable mention for a general news photo.

Other Daily Herald award winners include Ashley Stilson, Katie England and Braley Dodson for their continuing coverage of the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires, for which they were awarded second place.

Genelle Pugmire won third place for her personality profile on an Orem man with Down syndrome preparing to attend Utah State University, Kurt Hanson won third place for a review piece about Itto Sushi, Doug Fox won honorable mention for a lifestyle column about ELO’s spaceship stage, and Jared Lloyd won second place for sports deadline reporting on the Orem track team performing after their coach suffered a minor stroke.

Doug Fox also won first place for his headline writing. Ryan Olson won honorable mention for his editorial about the ‘Believer’ documentary.
