Daily Herald claims top prize for ‘general excellence’ in regional AP news contest
The Daily Herald won 36 awards in the Utah Idaho Spokane Associated Press Association’s annual news contest for work produced by journalists in 2018.
The Daily Herald won 11 first-place awards, 14 second-place awards and 11 third-place awards in the regional contest that includes submissions from news organizations in Utah, Idaho and eastern Washington.
First-place award-winning stories include “Dual Spectrums: More people with autism identify as LGBTQ than general population,” by Braley Dodson, while Daily Herald staff photographers Isaac Hale and Evan Cobb both came away with first-, second- and third-place awards for portraits, sports photos and breaking news photos.
The Daily Herald newsroom placed first in the association’s Division II General Excellence.
“I am extremely proud of the Daily Herald journalists, photographers and editors who have been recognized for their impressive work as they diligently cover Utah County every day,” said Jordan Carroll, Daily Herald executive editor. “Their passion and commitment for good journalism translates into impactful stories and images. We enjoy sharing the stories of Utah County’s residents, who have given us their trust, with the continued goal to always illuminate and inform.”
Last year, the Daily Herald won 17 awards in the same contest.
