Sego Awards founders say event seeks to recognize women
The Sego Awards, business awards specifically honoring female CEOs and founders in Utah, held its second annual awards show Friday night, honoring approximately 60 women for their business success, community impact and more.
New this year was the addition of two new categories for finalists: community and culture, and food and restaurants.
The two categories, according to Sego Awards co-founders Amy Stellhorn and Trent Mano, were added to recognize women who were having an impact in their spheres, the arts, music or the nonprofit space.
“We … wanted to make sure that we’re recognizing entrepreneurs and leaders in the community that can’t get recognized off of their revenue,” Mano explained.
The additional two categories bring the total number of categories in women can be nominated for to nine. But that’s not the only reason the second annual Sego Awards was bigger in its second year. Last year, 200 women were nominated. This year, 550 were nominated, with just seven judges sifting through the nominations to select finalists and eventually, winners for each category.
Despite having “winners,” Stellhorn and Mano emphasized that they want all of the finalists to be recognized as well.
“Last year, the focus very quickly went to the first- and second-place winners,” Stellhorn said. “This year, we are also trying to make sure visibility is created for all of the finalists as well.”
Another goal the Sego Awards co-founders shared, is their desire for the awards to be recognized for their legitimacy.
“It’s not like tokenism to have these awards,” Stellhorn said. “It’s recognizing people that should be recognized that in many cases are not being recognized.”
