Some vehicles are practical. Others are powerful. A few, like the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla, bring the best of both worlds into one small, turbocharged, tire-gripping package. Toyota’s latest hot hatch was unapologetically thrilling, yet managed to be a perfectly capable daily driver — even during a hectic holiday week full of sound checks, stages, and fireworks.
We had the opportunity to spend our behind the wheel of the 2025 GR Corolla, during the Fourth of July holiday. Between everyday errands and multiple Fourth of July events, this compact beast not only kept up with our busy schedule, it brought a dose of fun to every stoplight and every on-ramp along the way.
A real-world rocket
To put it simply, the GR Corolla was an adrenaline rush wrapped in a five-door hatchback. Designed by Toyota’s performance-focused Gazoo Racing division, the GR Corolla featured a 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out an astonishing 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Yes, you read that right — three cylinders and 300 ponies.

Coupled with a six-speed manual transmission and a rally-inspired GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, the GR Corolla drove like something straight out of the Fast and Furious franchise. You half expect Dominic Toretto to pull up beside you at a stoplight and ask if you want to race for pink slips.
But unlike the flashy cars of the silver screen, the GR Corolla managed to be relatively understated. Our test model wore the Circuit Edition trim, which added a carbon-fiber roof, vented hood, sport seats, and upgraded brakes — all while maintaining a hatchback profile that blended into suburban life just enough to surprise everyone when we hit the gas.
The week that was: From Provo to West Jordan
The GR Corolla served as our trusty companion for a full seven days, and it never missed a beat — even as the calendar filled up with holiday obligations. From the moment it arrived, the GR felt ready to take on anything we threw at it, starting with a week of daily errands and commutes around Utah County.
With its small footprint and nimble handling, the Corolla was a joy to drive through town. Maneuvering around traffic in Provo, Orem, and Springville was effortless, and thanks to its hatchback layout, we never lacked for cargo space when loading up gear. The rear seats fold flat, and that came in handy more than once as we hauled sound equipment and stage supplies from one event to another.

The real test came during the July 4th weekend, starting with our involvement at America’s Freedom Festival in downtown Provo. Craig was tasked with running sound at the Freedom Days Stage — a full setup involving mixers, cables, microphones, and three day’s worth of live entertainment. The GR Corolla may not be a cargo van, but it did a fantastic job of handling the necessary gear runs.
We made several trips between the storage unit, downtown Provo, and home over the three-day celebration, and every drive felt like a bonus round in a racing game. The GR’s crisp gear changes, taut suspension, and turbocharged rush made even the shortest commute exciting.
And just when we thought things couldn’t get busier, Craig was called up to West Jordan on the 4th itself to help his business partner with a stage setup before their evening fireworks show. The drive up I-15 gave us a chance to stretch the Corolla’s legs. The GR-Four system kept us confidently planted at highway speeds, and the extra power made merging and passing an absolute breeze. Plus, we still averaged around 23 mpg during our combined driving, which isn’t bad for something that high-strung.
Inside the cockpit
The interior of the GR Corolla was all business — focused, tight, and built for driving. The sport bucket seats hugged us in all the right ways, and the Alcantara trim and red contrast stitching added just enough flair to remind us that it was no ordinary Corolla.

A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster dominated the dash and could be customized to show performance-focused data like turbo pressure, AWD torque split, and gear position. It’s an enthusiast’s dream come true.
Toyota’s latest infotainment system, displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen, was fast and easy to use, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We were able to stream music and podcasts seamlessly throughout the week, including all the patriotic playlists for the big holiday.
And we can’t forget about the sound — not the audio system, but the exhaust note. The GR Corolla crackled and growled like a rally car. It was not obnoxious, but it was far from subtle. Driving through downtown Provo during setup for the Freedom Festival, the throaty rumble turned a few heads.
The everyday fun factor
What makes the 2025 GR Corolla so special wasn’t just its performance — it’s how livable it was. We’ve driven other hot hatches that were fast but punishing. Not so here. The ride was firm but not harsh, and the manual gearbox proved light and intuitive.

We could drive this car to work, to the grocery store, and then blast through a canyon road on the weekend without switching vehicles.
At the end of the week
Toyota could have phoned it in with a sporty trim on a regular Corolla, but instead they produced something special — a legitimate rally-bred hatchback that feels just as at home in a race paddock as it did in our driveway.
The 2025 GR Corolla was proof that driving can still be fun. In a world increasingly dominated by crossovers and CVTs, this turbocharged, all-wheel-drive, manual-shift rocket would be a gift to anyone who remembers why they fell in love with cars in the first place.
If you’re looking for something that brings the spirit of the Fast and Furious era into today’s world — all while giving you room for groceries and gear — the GR Corolla just might be your next ride.
