Construction continues on the storefront of a new Target at the Provo Towne Centre on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Roche Constructors announced Monday it has started in earnest the construction on the new Target store at the Provo Towne Centre. The project, which is planned for completion in 2024, will transform the now-empty Dillard’s department store.

“We’ve partnered with Target (Corporation) a number of times over the years and their stores are some of our favorite projects to date,” said Tom Roche, president and CEO. “We’re excited to bring a new, fresh, and inviting atmosphere to the Provo, Utah, community.”

The future Target store will boast 135,260 square feet of aesthetic upgrades and overall store improvements, including vibrant colors and modern design elements. Additionally, the new location will feature a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, Ulta Beauty, Target Optical and an adult beverage department.

The first floor will be the main shopping level, with the ground or bottom floor providing storage for Target goods. The plan is to also have some outdoor ground floor-entry retail spaces facing south toward Home Depot.

“In addition to the improved shopping experience, the new Target will also have a refurbished loading dock to ensure seamless operations for incoming and outgoing merchandise,” said Aaron Evans, project manager. “Having built a number of big-box and grocery stores over the years, we know how important it is to ensure that logistics are considered in addition to the customer experience.”

In February, the word was out that a Target store would replace the location Dillard’s once occupied at the Provo Towne Centre.

For owner Brixton Capital, that means another milestone in the mall’s renovation.

“The lease with Target is an exciting first step toward the full transformation of Provo Towne Centre into a reimagined mixed-use center that meets the modern needs of the community,” Brixton Vice President of Development Justin Long said in February.

As part of the February announcement of the Super Target, Mayor Michelle Kaufusi noted how this store will help build up the mall and surrounding area.

“Target’s commitment to our community and Brixton’s efforts to revitalize an essential commercial center reflect the strength of Provo’s economy,” Kaufusi said. “We look forward to Brixton’s ongoing investment in Provo at Provo Towne Centre.”

Project Manager Sam Bernard added, “This will rejuvenate the Provo mall as a whole. It is needed in the community and will provide new jobs. It will go from being an empty shell to people coming to shop.”

According to Bernard, the building had to be completely gutted to meet new building and seismic codes that have been upgraded since it was first built.

In the past 30 years, Roche Constructors, with regional offices in Colorado and Nevada, has completed over 125 Target projects.
