Time-tested traditions and new event for families at Santaquin Orchard Days
Much thought and effort has gone into planning for the annual celebration of Santaquin Orchard Days, which will include cherished traditions in addition to new family-friendly activities.
On July 27 from 6 to 9 p.m., residents can participate in the city’s family night and the event’s new main attraction — a water gun maze.
According to Jolynn Foreman, Santaquin City events coordinator and mastermind behind the maze, it is “like laser tag but for water guns.”
Foreman first tried out the idea at an elementary school field day, where it was a success.
“The maze was so much fun and the kids thought it was the greatest thing in the world,” said Foreman.
“I’ve never seen kids having so much fun,” she added.
The children’s feedback led Foreman to plan the event on a larger scale for Orchard Days. Foreman said a course of cardboard and plywood sheets will be set up on the field behind the recreation offices at 45 W. 100 South. Water guns will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring their own as well.
Foreman emphasized the water gun maze, and other events at the family night, are not solely for children.
“We want whole families involved and everyone to play. Everything that’s going on there is for adults and kids together,” she said.
Family night will kick off with the children’s parade at 5:45 Monday, July 27. The parade will leave from Centennial Park at 300 W. 100 South after a raffle for a bike and other prizes. Children are encouraged to bring pre-decorated bikes, wagons and scooters.
Other events at family night include a live band, food and craft vendors, free carnival games, quilt show, art show and sidewalk chalk art event.
In addition, two petting zoos will be on-site — one with pony rides and another with exotic animals such as a fox and python.
Children also have unlimited access to bounce houses and a giant slip ‘n’ slide by purchasing a $6 wristband.
Family night will wrap up with an outdoor showing of “The Neverending Story” at 9:30 p.m.
