Bang, bang on the door: Rocky Mountain WingShak is a little old place where we can eat together
The name of a new place to eat in American Fork says it all: The Rocky Mountain WingShak serves up more kinds of wings than you can imagine and it’s pretty darn small — about the size of a shack, you might say.
Tucked in the middle of a strip mall in American Fork, with room enough for only six picnic tables, the new eatery specializes in buffalo chicken wings and also serves other Southern fare like pulled-pork sandwiches and other fried food.
In fact, “fried” could be applied to most of the food at the Rocky Mountain WingShak, which keeps a necessary roll of paper towels at each table. From buffalo chicken wings to buffalo shrimp, and chicken tenders to french fries, onion rings and cheese sticks, you’d be hard pressed to find a dish that wasn’t battered and cooked in hot oil.
But if you’re a health nut, we figure you’ll probably know what you’re getting into as soon as you read the sign for the WingShak, which makes it known that fried chicken wings are what this restaurant does best.
The magic of the WingShak’s wings lies in the sauces. You can order your wings mild, medium, hot or XX-hot, but be warned that one of the servers said some people complain that even the mild wings are still too hot. The BBQ, Teriyaki and Pineapple BBQ sauces are much more mild, but they still give the wings a tangy kick. You also can choose from garlic pepper, hot garlic pepper and lemon pepper flavors.
Wings are served with ranch or bleu cheese dip and supposedly celery sticks, but we never saw any celery with our order. With that said, we didn’t take a moment to complain, as we were totally impressed by the quick and efficient service — even when our visit came right in the middle of the restaurant’s harried Super Bowl preparations.
We tried the Buffalo Tenders, which come in a three-piece or five-piece meal, with the Pineapple BBQ sauce. The tenders were, of course, very fried and very large, and the sauce was a perfect combination of sweet and tangy. (Our server mentioned that this sauce was one of the most popular choices.)
Like we said, you may be hard pressed to find something that’s not fried at this restaurant, but it’s not impossible.
The tasty BBQ Pork Sandwich was piled so high with tender pulled pork that the meat fell off the bun many times. We also were glad the sandwich came with more delicious barbecue sauce on the side and a refreshing side of coleslaw.
The WingShak also serves a few salads, a Garden Salad, Frito Salad, served with chili, Chicken Salad and Buffalo Chicken Salad. Our Chicken Salad seemed like a slightly fresher version of a bagged salad from the grocery store and came with a prepackaged bag of croutons, but we were informed that the dressings, thankfully, were homemade.
As we would expect at a Southern-influenced restaurant, the hospitality of the employees was genuine. It was quick and cheerful, but it left the best taste in our mouths when we were served a complimentary caramel apple at the end of our meal.
