Shiver me timbers! Long John’s Frozen Lemonade is great!
Editor’s Note: There is a Long John Silver’s in Salt Lake City at 36 S. State St. Telephone: (801) 521-2574.
This week I reached out for a large IceFlow Frozen Strawberry Lemonade at America’s No. 1 fish fry, Long John Silver’s, with 1,400 restaurants in 43 states from sea to shining seafood.
This makes total sense. Seafood always tastes better with a spritz of lemon. Or, in this case, frozen lemonade that literally will shiver your timbers, matey. This is one spine-chilling drink. You may feel like putting on some long johns. Isn’t this how the Titanic got into trouble?
Total calories: 310. Fat grams: 0. Dietary fiber: 0 grams. Carbs: 79 grams. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $1.79. But participating Long John’s have a half-price happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m., which makes me three times as happy.
Long John Silver’s IceFlow Frozen Strawberry Lemonade is not like those cups of Minute Maid Soft Frozen Lemonade you find in supermarkets and stadiums. Actually, Minute Maid Soft Frozen Lemonade is pretty hard — you have to dig at it with a spoon and eat the scrapings. Long John Silver’s IceFlow Frozen Strawberry Lemonade is closer to an Icee that kids drink like crazy, or an old-fashioned Slushie or Slurpee.
The IceFlow Frozen Strawberry Lemonade is meant to be sipped through a straw. Go gentle into that good night — that first sip is a doozy. You might get an ice-cream headache. I hate when that happens!
I see this Frozen Lemonade more as a dessert than a dinnerside drink. It won’t replace a soda or iced tea. But for sipping on your way home, or out to the parking lot, Frozen Lemonade is the cherry on top of your fried seafood platter, with a side order of fried clams and extra crumblies, please. Love those Long John Silver’s fried dough crumblies. OK, so they’re not health food.
My favorite thing about Long John’s Frozen Lemonade is the even balance between sweet and tart. It doesn’t have that filling, creamy texture of a smoothie or the gag-me glop of some kids’ drinks. This one goes down easy and lets you feel like a grown-up.
Don’t forget to ring the bell as you leave Long John Silver’s. OK, stop! That’s enough ringing.
Long John Silver’s also has plain Classic Lemon IceFlow Frozen Lemonade, minus the jolt of strawberry and minus a few calories that won’t make a difference in how things shape up when you go swimsuit shopping next spring.
Long John Silver’s already is planning an extension of its IceFlow Frozen Lemonade franchise. Limited-time flavors are on the drawing board, with Black Cherry headed our way in October.
