Denny’s gets mac ‘n cheesy
This week I reached out for a Mac ‘n Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt, part of the new Let’s Get Cheesy menu at America’s 24-hour diner, Denny’s, with 1,600 restaurants from California to the New York Island — this burger was made for you and me.
Denny’s is jumping on the fromage frenzy with its Let’s Get Cheesy menu. Pizzas are finding new places to hide cheese, it’s hard to find a plain burger without cheese in the drive-thru, and what’s an omelet without cheese? Cheese is everywhere. Now so many people are saying “cheese” at Denny’s that you’d think it was school picture day.
The Let’s Get Cheesy menu sounds like Denny’s forgot the decimal point on its corporate cheese order and now has 100 billion pounds of cheddar that it has to use before it spoils. So the mad scientists in R&D have concocted: The Cheesy Breakfast Sampler — cheddar smoked sausage and two eggs scrambled with cheddar, served with hash browns topped with shredded cheddar. The Winner Winner Cheesy Dinner — two deep-fried, breaded, chopped beef steaks covered in pepper Jack cheese, served with macaroni and cheese and broccoli topped with cheese sauce. The Big Cheese Country-Fried Steak & Eggs — a large, fried, chopped beef steak smothered in pepper Jack sauce, hash browns topped with melted cheddar and two eggs any way you like ’em.
The items on the Let’s Get Cheesy menu range from $5 to $8.49. But if you’re still not getting enough cheese, you can ask for EXTRA cheese for only 69 cents more. You also would qualify for a starring role on “What’s Eating You,” the show about bizarre food compulsions on the E! Entertainment channel. That’s entertainment?
The absolute headliner of the Let’s Get Cheesy rollout is the Mac ‘n Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt. Strap yourself in for this diet onslaught. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Here’s the blueprint: a quarter-pound, hand-pressed beef patty topped with Denny’s new creamy macaroni and cheese, melted cheddar cheese and zesty Frisco sauce on grilled potato bread. Served with a side of wavy-cut french fries.

There isn’t a diet on earth that the Mac ‘n Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt doesn’t smash to smithereens. It’s a belly-buster on so many levels. I can just see the inventor of this sandwich running in a meadow, being chased by men in white lab coats waving butterfly nets.
Let’s break down this sandwich. The quarter-pound beef patty … no problem there. Macaroni and cheese as a burger topping … surprisingly, no problem there, either. Mac ‘n cheese on a hamburger is no crazier than a fried egg, which is a new trend in burgers, and one I happen to enjoy. Ordering your burger with bacon, cheese and a fried egg is like eating breakfast and lunch at the same time. It totally works.
Of course, piling more cheddar cheese on top of macaroni and cheese is like spiking the ball in the end zone. This burger is now cheesier than “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” especially the recent episode where Kim’s fiance learned that Kim had been married once before.
I was concerned that there might be some fallout from the mac ‘n cheese, but it stayed put on top of the burger. There was some ooze from the Frisco sauce, which tastes like a blend of 1,000 Island dressing and French dressing. But I ate over the plate, so peripheral damage was contained.
The grilled potato bread was a pleasant surprise, something different for a change, even for a burger smothered with macaroni and cheese.
The macaroni and cheese is made with shells, not the usual pasta shape. The cheese sauce is white and very creamy. Don’t go looking for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in either the yellow or the blue box.
The Mac ‘n Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt is a mouthful — a lot of words AND a lot of food. But it really is delicious, and it fills you up — and then some.
Your choice is: Do you want to spend 1,690 calories and 99 fat grams on lunch? Maybe once in a while. You can get back on the wagon tomorrow.
