BK Chef’s Choice Burgers prove bigger is better
This week I reached out for a new Bacon Cheddar BBQ BK Chef’s Choice Burger — whew, that’s a mouthful — at the world’s No. 2 burger bistro, Burger King, with 12,500 restaurants across the U.S. and around the world.
We’re usually wary of any drive-thru delicacy with more than two words in its title. For example, “The Whopper” is the chain’s bellwether, so Burger King knows that brevity is the soul of wit … and sandwiches.
Here’s the blueprint: a 5.5-ounce ground chuck patty, two slices of melted cheddar, three slices of naturally smoked hardwood bacon, red onion, romaine lettuce, ripe tomatoes, creamy mayo and barbecue sauce on an artisan, split-top bun.
Total calories: 820. Fat grams: 56. Sodium: 135 mg. Dietary fiber: 4 g. Carbs: 45 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $4.99.
The new Bacon Cheddar BBQ BK Chef’s Choice Burger joins the Original BK Chef’s Choice and new Bacon & Bleu BK Chef’s Choice in Burger King’s lineup of premium sandwiches featuring upgraded ingredients at an upgraded price. There’s pain at the pump.
The Bacon Cheddar BBQ BK Chef’s Choice Burger starts with an oversized 5.5-ounce chuck patty that’s leaner than typical fast-food burgers. So the patty is bigger after it’s flame-broiled and hits the bun. The lettuce is whole-leaf romaine instead of that chopped lettuce nonsense that falls out of the bun, bounces off your pants, careens off the car seat, past the emergency break, into the floor mats … nothing but net.
The tomatoes are red ‘n’ ripe. The barbecue sauce is from Sweet Baby Ray’s, my favorite supermarket sauce — and we appreciate recognizable brand names in the drive-thru. Those 55-gallon drums of school cafeteria ketchup frighten me.
The cheddar is thick-sliced, and the bacon is thick-sliced. Packing 820 calories and 56 fat grams, this burger eventually will have the same effect on you.
Here’s a quibble: the raw red onions. Next time you’re in a drive-thru late at night, look how many raw onions you see on the ground. It’s the No. 1 thing burger bozos chuck out the window. Just say “hold the onions.”
Burger King has a winner with these BK Chef’s Choice burgers. They’re bigger and just flat out taste better than the normal fare. One look and you know this is a step up the burger chain. The question is: Are you willing to pay extra for extra quality? We’re already at the $5 barrier, who knows what’s on the other side?
The Bacon & Bleu BK Chef’s Choice Burger, another tongue-twister, features crumbly Wisconsin buttermilk bleu cheese. It’s also got 760 calories and 51 fat grams.
The Original BK Chef’s Choice, with the same 5.5-ounce chuck patty but fewer accoutrements, is significantly leaner, with 650 calories and 40 fat grams. That might be your play if you’re watching your pants size but still enjoy a luxury burger once in a while.
