CLOSED: Wasatch Deli Co. worth a drive out to Eagle Mountain
If you have a hankering for a great sandwich and don’t mind traveling off the beaten path to obtain it, then Wasatch Deli Co. is definitely a worthwhile destination.
The small deli, located in the Ranches portion of Eagle Mountain, offers a wide array of tasty sandwiches — not to mention soups, burgers and salads.
The deli is actually quite a bit bigger than it appears from the outside, with the small entry giving way to a much roomier-than-expected dining room. Even at that, there was seating for only around 30 patrons. There weren’t any other diners when we started our Saturday afternoon visit, but during the course of our meal several visitors stopped in to pick up take-out orders. And we could easily see the deli being an extremely popular and convenient place for locals to simply call in a take-out order.
Patrons place their orders at a front desk, with both paper menus and a huge chalkboard menu for reference. There were three fresh soups of the day available and when we had trouble deciding which to order, we were offered small samples of each. That made our decision easy — as we opted for larger portions of both the Tomato Basil and Potato Bacon concoctions. The Tomato Basil was pure delight — and even came with a slight zesty kick that we had not detected in our smaller sample. We loved it. The Potato Bacon was also rich, hearty and delicious. We were very pleased with both offerings.
We tried four different sandwiches and they were all stellar. The Philly Cheesesteak was an immediate hit, with sliced prime rib mixed with peppers and onions, and served on a hoagie for a mouth-watering combination. We also really enjoyed the Chile Verde Sandwich — featuring pork with chile verde, tomatoes, avocado, lettuce, sour cream and provolone cheese. This also came on a hoagie, as did the signature Wasatch Club, which was stuffed with ham, turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce, mayo and Swiss cheese.
Another favorite was the Turkey Avocado sandwich, which was served on ciabatta bread and was stacked with turkey, avocado, roast peppers, spinach, provolone cheese, basil sauce and mayo. Yum!
All sandwiches are served with fries (thin cut and excellent tasting), or you can sub for pasta or a salad for an extra $.49. The plates also come with a pickle spear. Now, we are not pickle aficionados, but these were tasty enough that even we finished them off. That’s saying something.
We couldn’t resist sampling the Avocado Bacon Burger, which was pretty good in its own right, and the chicken tenders, which came in a kids meal. One distinction we liked about the tenders is that they were actually, if you can imagine, tender — and not with a crunchy exterior like those served at so many fast-food restaurants.
A typical array of fountain drinks are available, but the deli also has a fridge stocked with bottles of specialty sodas, such as sarsaparilla and orange cream soda. We opted for the latter, and loved it, although we didn’t get as much of it as we’d have liked, since most everyone else in our party wanted to sample it.
The deli also offers a fairly extensive breakfast menu, so we may have to give that a try sometime.
From our understanding, Wasatch Deli Co. has been open for several years, but reopened under new ownership last September. If you are anywhere in North Utah County and looking for a great sandwich, taking a side trip out to Eagle Mountain could very well be worth your time.
