Baskin-Robbins adds another Cake Bite to its lineup

By Ken Hoffman - | Aug 30, 2012

This week I reached out for a new OREO Cake Bite, the latest in the divine line of elegant pre-packaged Cake Bites, at the world’s longest ice-cream chain, Baskin-Robbins, with 6,600 stores linking 34 countries.

Cake Bites are what you’d get if you slapped a Klondike Bar on top of a brownie and dipped the whole thing in chocolate candy coating. Stop me when I say something you don’t absolutely love.

Here’s the Oreo Cake Bite blueprint: Oreo Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream over chocolate cake covered with chocolate-flavored coating and finished with a buttercream rosette.

I’ll save you the bother of clicking on www.dictionary.com. A rosette is a little flower design. I lick them off first so I can get down to business. These are for people who insist on getting an icing flower on their piece of birthday cake. Very annoying.

Total calories: 310. Fat grams: 18. Sodium: 190 mg. Dietary fiber: 2 g. Carbs: 35 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $2.99. Or you can get a package of four Oreo Cake Bites for $9.99.

Baskin-Robbins introduced Cake Bites last year. The originals are: Double Chocolate — chocolate ice cream over chocolate cake, enrobed with chocolate ganache coating, finished with chocolate accent. Praline Caramel — Pralines ‘n Cream ice cream over white cake, enrobed with white-chocolate ganache coating, finished with caramel drizzle and chopped pralines. Chocolate Mint — Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream over chocolate cake, enrobed with chocolate ganache coating, finished with white-chocolate drizzle. Vanilla Blondie — Vanilla ice cream over white cake, enrobed with white-chocolate ganache coating, finished with chocolate accent.

Baskin-Robbins is getting fancy not only with its desserts, but with its descriptions. “Enrobed”?

“My uncle is a bum. He spends the whole day enrobed, smoking cigars, eating pizza and watching ESPN.”

Last Valentine’s Day, Baskin-Robbins unleashed two more Cake Bites: Love Potion No. 31 — Love Potion ice cream resting on rich chocolate cake, covered in a chocolate-flavored coating and finished with a raspberry-flavored chocolate drizzle. Chocolate Dipped Strawberry — Very Berry ice cream over chocolate cake, covered in a chocolate-flavored coating and finished with a strawberry glaze drizzle and mini chocolate hearts.

And now Oreo Cookie Bites. I like these almost as much as the Double Chocolate. “My name is Ken H., and I am a chocoholic.”

Oreo Cake Bites start with Baskin-Robbins’ version of Cookies ‘n’ Cream ice cream. Baskin-Robbins uses real Oreos, so bonus points to B-R. I appreciate familiar supermarket brand names in the drive-thru.

For a marketing department that has no problem tossing out “enrobed,” Baskin-Robbins maybe should have avoided calling these “Bites.” “Bites” is so subjective. Like when somebody says, “Can I have a bite of your hamburger?” and they barely leave you a pickle. Or those “two-bite brownies” that are really one small nibble?

Baskin-Robbins’ Cake Bites are about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. If you can eat these in one bite, I suggest you join the circus. The sword swallower is out sick this week with a sore throat.

My only point deduction for the Oreo Cake Bite is: They put so much chocolate coating on them (which should be extra points) that the coating breaks when you bite into it. There can be some fallen pieces on your lap, and two minutes later, you’ve got soft chocolate goop on your pants. Don’t try to clean it with a napkin — you’ll only shmear it.

Starting at $4.32/week.
