Second breakfast comes to Denny’s
This week I reached out for Gandalf’s Gobble Melt, part of the new “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” movie tie-in menu, at America’s 24-hour diner, Denny’s, with 1,600 restaurants across the country … mostly off freeway exits.
Don’t worry if you missed the exit because the idiot in the next lane was talking on the phone and wouldn’t let you cut over. There’s another Denny’s about 10 miles up the road.
I’ve got to give Denny’s credit. The diner chain is locked into “The Hobbit,” but it’s not just taking its regular burger and calling it the Ring Burger for the movie’s run. Denny’s has taken a whole array of regular items and Hobbit-ed them up … and created several more just for the movie.
We’ll check out the Hobbit menu in a bit, but my favorite is clearly Gandalf’s Gobble Melt. Here’s the blueprint: tender sliced turkey breast and savory stuffing topped with melted Swiss cheese, placed on grilled potato bread with a cranberry honey-mustard spread. Served with gravy for dipping and your choice of side.

I’m guessing some wizard in Denny’s research and development department invented Gandalf’s Gobble Melt the day after last Thanksgiving. It’s a leftovers sandwich — and there’s nothing wrong with that. Thanksgiving dinner always tastes better on Friday.
In fact, there’s so much right, I can’t believe it took a movie to get this on Denny’s menu. Turkey sandwiches are good from the start. Throw some stuffing on top, and they’re better. Add a slice of melted Swiss, and you’ve got a hit. The cranberry honey-mustard is the perfect finishing touch.
Gandalf’s Gobble Melt is served with a side bowl of turkey gravy for dipping, but I spooned it directly onto the sandwich. The grilled potato bread is an unusual taste — Denny’s is making an effort. This sandwich, plus a side of fries, for $7.49 is a heck of a deal.
Denny’s “Hobbit”-inspired menu jumped the gun on the Dec. 14 release of the movie, so brace yourself for an onslaught of Denny’s Hobbit commercials: “The riches of Middle-Earth Await You!”
Here are the other new “Hobbit”-inspired creations from Denny’s — designed for “first breakfast, lunch, dinner or second breakfast.” I love that — first and second breakfast. Breakfast is now the most important meals of the day.
