Six spots to hit for hot drinks and sweet treats this winter

By Kimberly Christenson - Correspondent - | Dec 20, 2012

When the weather outside is frightful, do you know what’s even more delightful than a fire? Cozying up next to it with a warm drink in one hand and a treat in the other. So, we scoped out five places in Utah Valley where you can get both. (You provide the fire.)

CLOSED: Decadence: An artisan café

This coffee-alternative destination has been heating up the valley’s café scene since it opened last July. Decadence specializes in Crio Bru – 100 percent roasted cocoa beans that brew like coffee. That means a full menu of espressos, frappes, mochas and the like without any coffee. Decadence also serves Belgian hot cocoa, fresh pastries from the Provo Bakery and Tropical Dreams ice cream, an incredibly creamy Hawaiian ice cream that will undoubtedly have you going back for more. (Don’t say we didn’t warn you.) This place definitely lives up to its name.

Cravings Twin Companies

Twin sisters Alisha Nuttal and Angela Wilson created two different companies with one purpose: to satisfy your cravings. Cravings Alisha’s Cupcakes serves uniquely delectable cupcakes made famous by their appearance on The Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” (watch for them again in March). Pair your Egg Nog or White Chocolate Strawberry cupcake with a hot chocolate for a treat that will please both your palate and your frozen phalanges. Angela’s Cravings Bistro, famous for its gourmet grilled sandwiches, is a frequent stop for Utah Valleyites who are addicted to the Strawberry Grilled S’more sandwich. If you’re feeling more daring, try a grilled Twinkie and dip it in your flavored hot cocoa. Like the twins, their stores are eight minutes apart.

Enliten Café

This new extension of Guru’s Café will not leave you wanting for hot drink and treat options. Try Enliten Café’s signature Cinnamon Roll Steamer or a peanut butter hot chocolate made with real peanut butter and chocolate, or opt for a unique cranberry cider. Pair it with a freshly baked cookie, Panna Cotta, berry cobbler or another house-made treat. You can also order anything from the Guru’s menu without having to walk next door.

Roll Up Café

Instead of driving past the oversized owl on State Street in Orem, stop in and check out Roll Up Café’s new menu. Its 16 dessert crepes have names that range from “Awkward First Date” (Bananas Foster with ice cream) to “The Proposal” — two sweet crepes and a diamond ring with a price tag of $3,000. (Don’t worry — the other crepes start at $4.25).The café also serves coffee, tea and gourmet hot cocoas in flavors like Nutella and Red Velvet.

The Cocoa Bean

When it comes to trying Utah Valley’s best hot chocolate and sweet treats, The Cocoa Bean Café is a must. Hot drinks include 11 different flavors of hot chocolate, the café’s signature Cocoa Beans — drinks made from imported roasted cocoa beans and artisan drinking chocolate. If that doesn’t leave you with enough options, just wait for the cupcake menu. With 30 tantalizing flavors like Death by Chocolate, Madagascar Vanilla Vanilla and Coconut Lime, you’ll have your work cut out for you.
