Subway’s new melts won’t tip the scales
This week I reached out for a Black Forest Egg White and Cheese Flatbread Morning Melt — we have a new record for the longest name of a sandwich — at the world’s No. 1 fast-food chain, Subway, with 36,054 restaurants in all 50 states and 98 countries on this crazy blue marble.
Make that 36,055 restaurants. No, 36,056 restaurants. That’s how fast Subway is opening new sandwich shops … in malls, in department stores, in schools, in hospitals, in office buildings.
You know what I’m waiting for? Someone to open a Subway inside another Subway — to handle the lunchtime spillover.
The Black Forest Egg White, etc., is part of Subway’s Fresh Fit Breakfast Menu, with three sandwiches weighing in under 200 calories.
The other low-cal sandwiches are the Egg White and Cheese English Muffin Melt and the Steak Egg White and Cheese Flatbread Morning Melt.
Under 200 calories? Great, I’ll take two of ’em. That’s a lot of bang for your calorie buck. Two of these Fresh Fit sandwiches have fewer calories than one Sausage McMuffin and Egg at McDonald’s (450 calories).
Here’s the blueprint: Black Forest ham, a small egg-white omelet and cheese on a 6-inch flatbread. The sandwich is toasted to bring out the ham’s smoky flavor and the cheese’s gooey splendor.
Total calories: 170. Fat grams: 4. Sodium: 610 mg. Dietary fiber: 5 g. Carbs: 24 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $3, including your choice of a 16-ounce cup of Seattle’s Best Coffee or a 21-ounce fountain drink.
If you’re going with a soft drink, pick a diet soda. Don’t spoil this “under 200 calories” shtick with a big ol’ Coke.
Since we’re still 30 calories under the sales pitch, wig out and ask your sandwich artist to load up your Morning Melt with green peppers and maybe a slice of tomato for juice. There’s no butter on this sandwich, so they’re a little dry.
Remember, this sandwich is headed into the toaster, so pick your veggies accordingly. Lettuce is a waste of everybody’s time.
The Black Forest Ham Egg White and Cheese Flatbread Morning Melt tastes pretty darn delicious for being ridiculously light on everything, including price.
An egg-white omelet is one of the few food items that tastes just as good as its high-octane version. Egg whites are clearly the choice over “egg substitutes” that swear they’re 99 percent real egg but smell like a funky gym locker.
The Egg White and Cheese English Muffin is a smart play, too. English muffins are the unsung hero of the entire sandwich industry. Next time you make burgers at home, put them on toasted English muffins. The little pockets of air hold the grease and ketchup better than plain buns. You’ll never go back.
