Capsule Review: La Puente, Dave and Cranky Chuckie’s

La Puente

When making arrangements to dine at La Puente, be sure that you plan to arrive hungry. The portions are generous, and by generous I mean that our party of three adults and two children could probably have filled up just on the half-size portion of Nachos Grande that we ordered as an appetizer. The regular Nachos Grande could probably feed a small football team. The Large Combination Platter has even more edible mass than the nachos and is a good means of having it all. The indecisive diner will enjoy a cheese enchilada, tostada, taco, burrito, Chili Verde, rice, refried beans and a large flour tortilla, all for less than $10.

Dave & Cranky Chuckie’s

How could anyone not want to eat at a place so intriguingly titled? Billed as a Tastefully Abrasive American Bistro, Dave & Cranky Chuckie’s provided one of the most enjoyable dining adventures we have had in months. We requested a half order of two different appetizers and were delightfully surprised when the plate came to discover that the chef had artfully weaved the two — Bacon Nachos and Triple Layered Cheese Fries — into one huge pile of glorious gluttony. We also thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our meal, including samples of Cheddar, Bacon and Leek Soup, Braised Apple Chicken, the Strawberry and Grilled Chicken salad with raspberry pomegranate vinaigrette, and the truthfully titled Epic Loaded Baked Potato. It was all topped off with a bowl of Chocolate Custard with Blackberry Compote for dessert. If you want a great meal, delivered with equal parts sass and style, then this is your place. Now open for lunch, as well as dinner.
