Dining Capsules: Capt. Len’s City Barbecue

By Staff | Jul 5, 2012

Capt. Len’s City Barbecue

We had been hearing some good things about Capt. Len’s, so we ventured out to Alpine on a Saturday night to check it out. Capt. Len’s is not a large restaurant, but it doesn’t feel small either. The walls feature large framed photos of blues greats — and the restaurant often plays host to musical acts, although there were none performing the night of our visit. The unanimous highlight at our table was the brisket, which was extremely tender and oozed BBQ greatness. We also really enjoyed the ribs, both babyback and beef, and the smoked chicken. We suggest any of those meats and a side order of onion rings. Capt. Len’s certainly serves up a see-worthy vessel.

Nellie’s Diner

Nellie’s Diner in Provo is like those diners that you see in the movies, right down to the checkerboard trim on the menu. There’s a jukebox pumping out the golden oldies, of course, and you can even sit on a stool at the counter, if you’d like. There’s a breakfast-and-lunch vibe at Nellie’s, which is only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, but there are lots of burgers, salads and sandwiches if you do make a suppertime stopover. We particularly enjoyed the Nellie’s Deep Fried French Toast, a star of the breakfast menu, and our appetites were both whetted and satisfied by the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and the Chili Burger, served open face and smothered in chili, onion and tomatoes. If you’re in the mood for dessert, be sure to try the cookie sundae.
