Go fish: Five sushi spots that’ll have your taste buds swimming

By Kimberly Christenson - Correspondent - | Mar 15, 2012

When it comes to sushi, you want to be sure you are going to a restaurant with high-quality ingredients and high food safety standards — especially when you live thousands of miles from an ocean and your food has to travel a long way before it gets to your plate. We scoped out some of Utah Valley’s many sushi spots and found some of the finest, freshest places to have your fish and eat it raw. (Or cooked, if you prefer.)

Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is an authentic Japanese restaurant tucked away on the north side of Lehi’s main street. Tokyo’s cozy but comfortable dining area offers booths, tables and bar seats for those who’d like to see their sushi prepared firsthand. There is also seating situated around several Teppanyaki-style grills — a great option if you want to experience some entertaining Japanese Teppanyaki-style grilling (think a more affordable alternative to chain restaurants Benihana and Tepanyaki). A restaurant with a Teppanyaki-style grill is also a good way to be able to eat all the sushi you’d like without requiring everyone in your party to do the same. Tokyo is now offering an endless sushi deal that includes miso soup, a garden salad, edamame and all-you-can-eat sushi (with about 30 menu choices). The endless sushi lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for $12.99 and the endless sushi dinner is available from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. for $18.99. Sushi items range from $4-$13.

Koi Japanese Cuisine and Sushi Bar

Koi is a great option for a casual sushi night (with or without kids) or a lunch destination. Koi offers a lunch special from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with meals starting at $8.95. One of Koi’s most popular rolls is the Chameleon roll — salmon, inari, cucumber, cream cheese and lemon topped with avocado, spicy tuna, crab salad, eel sauce and crunchy tempura pieces. The Koi roll, shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with eel, avocado, spicy crab, eel sauce and crunchy tempura pieces is also a customer favorite. Sushi menu items range from $4.50-$15.95.

Sakura Japanese Steakhouse

Sakura is a spacious restaurant with an equally large sushi menu. Sakura boasts the BYU Sushi Doughnut and other unique rolls like the Tropicana and Snow White. Consider trying these and any of the other 70-something sushi options on the menu through Sakura’s all-you-can-eat sushi deal — offered for $14.99 at lunch and $18.99 at dinner, Monday through Friday. For guests in your party who aren’t into sushi, there is a full menu of dishes cooked right at your table on a Teppanyaki-style grill. Sushi items range from $4.29-$13.99.

Shoga Modern Japanese Sushi Bar and Restaurant

If you have sushi in mind for lunch, Shoga is a great Utah Valley option. For $9.75, you get two traditional rolls and a bowl of miso soup (lunch is served until 3 p.m.). If you want to try one of Shoga’s signature rolls, we recommend the Shoga special roll — tempura, green onion, avocado, and hamachi topped with fresh tuna, crab salad, cilantro and bell peppers with house sauce and sesame oil. The sweet and savory Mango Tango won’t let you down either. Sushi prices range from $4.25-$13.95.

Happy Sumo is in the Shops at Riverwoods and has a classy, welcoming atmosphere. On the menu, you’ll find Sumo’s special rolls like the unique Bacon Crunch roll, tempura shrimp, green onion and avocado rolled in bacon and tempura and served with a maple shoya dipping sauce and Sumo signature rolls like the Rock Crunch roll, crab, avocado and tempura asparagus topped with baked rock shrimp in a red pepper aioli, green onions and tobiko. Before you go, check out the online sushi menu, complete with photos of each roll. Sushi items range from $4-$14.50.
