Five local spots that stand out in the valley’s smoothie crowd

By Kimberly Christenson - Correspondent - | May 10, 2012

As the weather warms up, cooling down with a smoothie can be a nice alternative to the typical ice cream and snow cones of summer.

But all smoothies are not created equal. They can be watery, not flavorful enough or too sugary. So, we checked out some local spots that serve up first-rate smoothies, whether you’re looking for a treat or a delicious way to get your fruits (and even veggies) in.

Roxberry Juice

Roxberry Juice was founded by Brad Davis, a local entrepreneur who was a partner and executive with Zuka Juice and Jamba Juice — so this isn’t his first smoothie rodeo. Roxberry’s atmosphere is that of a retro diner and the smoothie menu offers indulgent treats like the Rootbeer Freeze and OMG Creamsicle, popular fruit smoothies like the customer favorite Passion Paradise and nutritionally targeted smoothies like the Flu Fighter and four varieties of green smoothies.

Kneaders Bakery & Cafe

While Kneaders is famous for its all-you-can-eat French toast and incredible lunch sandwiches, its smoothies are a must-try, too. We like the Morning Sunshine, and not just because it was named by owner Gary Worthington for his wife and co-owner, Colleen (aw). Other popular flavors include the Mango Tango and Pink Piña Colada.

The Juice Press

With more than 40 smoothie flavors, you’re likely to find something at the Juice Press that sounds good when that smoothie craving hits. Customer favorites include the Raspberry Colada, Jamaican Breeze and Purple Pineapple Passion. But if you aren’t feeling the tropical thing, consider opting for the Green Delicious, Chocolate Protein Punch or Peachy Keen. Jamba Juice

Jamba Juice has been a go-to smoothie spot for a long time, but it’s always coming up with new things to sip through those thick orange straws. Choose from fruit and veggie smoothies, fruit and yogurt parfaits (our favorite is the chunky strawberry topper) or an ever-growing menu of fruit smoothies. If that’s not enough variety for you, give the secret menu a try. White Gummi Bear, Pink Starburst and Fruity Pebbles are just a few of the off-menu items you can request. But, shhhh — it’s a secret.

Red Mango

As if we didn’t already love Red Mango for its indulgently creamy, all-natural frozen yogurt, it went and added probiotic-rich smoothies to the menu — and they don’t disappoint. We can’t get enough of the Banana Peanut Butter (frozen yogurt, peanut butter, banana and granola) and the Healthy Bones (frozen yogurt, pineapple, calcium and vitamin D).
