Mac ‘N Cheese lovers are in for a treat at Wendy’s
This week I reached out for a bowl of Mac ‘N Cheese, the timeless classic, at Wendy’s, where they have a new slogan: “Quality is Our Recipe.” We’re not opposed to quality, so let’s see if Wendy’s delivers the goods.
Here’s the blueprint: spiral cavatappi (there’s your vocabulary word of the day) noodles covered with a sauce made with fresh cream, fresh milk, real white Vermont cheddar and American cheeses, then topped with even more real shredded cheddar.
There’s so much real stuff going on that Wendy’s should bring back its old slogan, “You Know When It’s Real.”

Mac ‘N Cheese is one of three new Signature Sides — the others are Baked Sweet Potatoes and Chili Cheese Fries. Mac ‘N Cheese and Baked Sweet Potatoes are here for a limited time only. Chili Cheese Fries are here to stay.
Macaroni and cheese is such a favorite, I wish Wendy’s would put a monster serving on the menu for, say, $5. It’s too expensive to double, triple and quadruple up on $2.49 portions.
Wendy’s Mac ‘N Cheese is more fancy than the Kraft blue box kind that every kid in America eats eight days a week after school. Wendy’s version is lighter and creamier, and won’t turn your mouth Halloween orange like the Kraft classic.
Got to give Wendy’s credit for going the extra mile on its Mac ‘N Cheese. Combining white Vermont cheddar and American cheeses gives it a distinctive mild flavor and smooth consistency. The taste is a bull’s-eye. If macaroni and cheese is your thing, you’ve got a treat coming.
The Mac ‘N Cheese comes to your local Wendy’s already cooked, mixed and portioned. Your friendly burger flipper just pops it in the microwave and serves it steamy hot.
I liked the spiral noodles because they hold more cheese sauce than plain elbow macaroni. Plus they’re easier to stab with a fork; elbow macaroni is slippery. I could use those guys from “Deadliest Catch” to spear those last few elbow macaronis. Every noodle counts to a country obsessed with consuming as much cheese as possible.
The only add-on I might suggest is bacon. Macaroni and cheese with bacon is a wow. There are very few foods that don’t benefit from bacon.
The Baked Sweet Potato is a twist on regular bakers. They’re sweeter, all right, and pack more vitamins than white potatoes. Each Baked Sweet Potato comes with a dollop of buttery cinnamon spread. Plain butter works, too. This is a “Try it; you might like it” deal.
The Chili Cheese Fries … what took Wendy’s so long? They’re just regular Wendy’s fries, topped with regular Wendy’s cheese sauce, topped with regular Wendy’s chili. Did Wendy’s not realize that these things were already there and sort of go together?
