We’ve seen KFC’s Dip’ems before, but that’s OK

By Ken Hoffman - | Nov 15, 2012

This week I reached out for a box of Dip’ems, a.k.a. the Colonel’s Crispy Strips — only this time they come with two packets of sauce and instructions on how to dip them thar chicken strips into this here sauce.

Is this really necessary? This is like having a “serving suggestion” on a half-gallon carton of Haagen-Dazs. “Open top, insert spoon … serves one.”

Reinventing Crispy Strips is like Madonna scribbling some nonsense fake tattoo on her back and going on tour: It’s still the same old thing.

That’s not saying the same old thing ain’t pretty darn good. OK, maybe Madonna was a bad example. But we like the Colonel’s Crispy Strips.

Here’s the blueprint: three Dip’ems Extra Crispy chicken strips, one side dish, one buttermilk biscuit, a medium soft drink and two sauces.

Total calories: 400 (for the three chicken strips). Fat grams: 24. Sodium: 1,250 mg. Carbs: 17 g. Dietary fiber: 2 g. Protein: 29 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $5 for the box — chicken strips and all.

The big news with Dip’ems is the sauce menu. There are three new sauces: Creamy Buffalo, Orange Ginger and Bacon Ranch.

Bacon Ranch? That’s worlds colliding. Bacon makes everything taste 100 times better, and Americans would eat a catcher’s mitt if it were dipped in ranch dressing. Bacon Ranch will be No. 1, with everything else tied for last place. Sort of like the New York Giants in the NFC East standings.

The other three standby sauces are Honey BBQ, Honey Mustard and Creamy Ranch.

KFC is hopping aboard the dipping train. The chicken giant has hired mid-level comedians to give dipping instructions on its website. Things like, Does the “five-second rule” apply to sauce? What about double dipping? And this thing about people dipping pizza in ranch dressing is sick.

KFC’s Dip’ems are good-size strips. Double dipping is a necessity, unless you’re a sword swallower in the circus. But with three strips and two sauces, it shouldn’t be a problem. There’s plenty of chicken and sauce for one person in the box.

Smart move by KFC to use its Extra Crispy strips in the Dip’ems program. Original Recipe strips are too soft and mushy to hold up under the pressure and weight of dipping.

The bottom line here is: Which sauce you gonna pick? We’re all familiar with the Colonel’s Crispy Strips. Pick the right side: fries, slaw or mac ‘n’ cheese. The buttermilk biscuit is pretty perfect. I wouldn’t mind a whole box o’ biscuits and we can forget the whole chicken thing. And KFC is a Pepsi-products place, and we’re Diet Pepsi guzzlers. Five bucks is a bull’s-eye price.

Maybe a suggestion? KFC precooks a lot of its food, and chicken strips are not the best warming-tray survivors. If you’ve got the time and patience, ask them to fry you up some fresh strips. They’ll do it. Takes about 15 minutes.

Starting at $4.32/week.
