Plan ahead if you want to dine out on Thanksgiving

By Elyssa Andrus - Daily Herald - | Oct 25, 2012

You’re probably still carving pumpkins and putting the final touches on Halloween costumes, but October is still the time to start thinking about Thanksgiving if you want to dine out for the holiday. Several area restaurants will be open Thanksgiving Day, but the more popular ones (especially Sundance Resort and the Grand America Hotel) require reservations weeks in advance. If you want to enjoy turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie without a mountain of dishes afterwards, make a reservation soon at one of the following restaurants.

Sundance Resort

For a Thanksgiving Feast in Utah County, there’s probably no fancier place to dine than Sundance Resort. Its buffet is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Redford Center and costs $52 for adults, and $22 children 12 and younger. Expect a bountiful, gourmet meal in the resort’s rustic mountain setting. The menu includes everything from Almond Crusted French Toast and Lemon Vanilla “Soufflé” Pancakes to carved leg of lamb, prime rib and turkey breast. There also will be smoked salmon, Pacific oysters, pan-seared trout, herb-roasted chicken breast, maple-brined pork loin and dozens of sides (Wild Boar and Apple Stuffing) and desserts (gingerbread cheesecake and Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta). The list above only scratches the surface, so come starving and wear very stretchy pants.

Mimi’s Café

On Thanksgiving Day, the French-themed chain restaurant will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., featuring an “all-inclusive” turkey dinner served with gravy, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a slice of pumpkin pie for $15.99 adults, $8.99 children 12 and younger. If you simply don’t feel like a turkey dinner — what’s wrong with you? — you can order off Mimi’s traditional menu of bistro fare.

Grand America Hotel

Although it’s not in Utah County, it’s worth the drive to Salt Lake City for the Grand America Hotel’s Thanksgiving Day Brunch. The brunch will have seatings from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and costs $59 for adults (plus a 22-percent gratuity) and $29.50 for children ages 5-12 (plus a 22-percent gratuity). Children 4 and younger are free. The lavish menu features a number of “displays” and stations, such as the Grand Seafood Display, and bisque, cheese, Cobb salad, free-style eggs and crepe stations. There also will be items like roasted turkey, baby back ribs, prime rib and salmon; a staggering number of side dishes; and a chocolate fondue fountain and pantry shoppe desserts. For children, Grand America has a separate buffet with kid-friendly items such as mini corn dogs and Rice Krispies Treats. Chances are you’ll be so stuffed after the meal that you’ll want to sleep it off in one of the hotel’s beautiful, plush rooms.

The buffet will feature roasted turkey, prime rib, snow crab legs, fresh dill salmon and shrimp cocktail, as well as a big selection of salads (Strawberry Walnut Spinach Salad), sides (sweet potato casserole) and desserts (chocolate cake and pumpkin pie). In addition, the restaurant also will feature a complimentary Italian soda bar. Prices are $39.99 adults, $24.99 seniors 60 and older, $19.99 children 5-11, free for children 4 and younger.
