Laura’s Kitchen another fine option for authentic Mexican eats
If the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates had even been to Mexico, then he probably would have asked his students to ponder what is the best time to have a taco. Under most circumstances, it’s a trick question. (That Socrates was nothing if not a sly Mediterranean devil.) Duh — it’s always the best time to have a taco. Are you alive? Is there money in your wallet? Have a taco.
At Laura’s Kitchen in Provo, on the other hand, you can get more tacos for your money on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when the price is $0.99 instead of $1.50, so in your face, Socratic Method. Laura’s Kitchen may not be fancy, but does anybody really need a lace doily or a waiter with vest and black tie to enjoy a taco? I say, “Nffgh,” which might be more intelligible except that my mouth is full because one of the rules I live by is less talking, more eating tacos.
Part of the subset of Mexican eateries in Utah Valley that consists of authentic taquerias, Laura’s occupies a storefront in a strip mall on Freedom Boulevard in Provo. It’s tidy inside, and there’s a surprising amount of seating — split between small booths and tables — with a small, yet well-stocked salsa bar. You place your order at a counter in front of a large menu board that has photos of each entree to help you decide what looks good.
The tacos are served in small corn tortillas and there’s just about every kind of taco meat you could name available, including tripe and lengua (neither of which is how I roll, but if that’s your thing, then Laura’s has it). We stuck to asada (beef), carnitas (pork), chorizo (chicken) and pastor (pork) and were highly satisfied — the meats were flavorful and well cooked.
There are many other options, including some that are available only on weekends: tacos dorado, sopes, birria de chivo, menudo, enchiladas, tamales and pozole. So if you like to maximize your options, then consider visiting on Saturday or Sunday.
From the every-day menu, we also tried a beef torta, which is sort of like a burrito or taco served between hearty slices of bread instead of inside a tortilla. The taco sandwich concept may not be to every taste, but the torta at Laura’s has good fresh bread and excellent filling.
Our children, including the youngest, devoured the flaky, crispy quesadilla, and we also enjoyed a tostada and a barbacoa burrito. The burritos at Laura’s are as good as the tacos, which would probably have blown Socrates’s mind, or at least put a serious dent in his wallet.
If you love Mexican food the way they make it in Mexico and you like to save money when eating out, then Laura’s Kitchen should be at or near the top of your list.
