Pit stop: Provo pita shop offers respite from hunger games
When you visit a place called Pita Pit, it should come as no surprise what the main focus of the menu will be.
In fact, that is pretty much the entire menu. Although it should be pointed out that patrons have the option of turning any pita into a salad — by just eliminating the unleavened bread wrap that is the pita itself.
It doesn’t take a sandwich artist to realize that it would be pretty difficult to go wrong at Pita Pit. To begin with, there are more than 20 different options for your starting pita point. Those options mainly involve the different kinds of available meat, but also include just over a half-dozen veggie options.
Following that initial base, however, the rest of the toppings and sauces are pretty much all up to your own individual tastes. Pile on the toppings and flavors you prefer, and you’re pretty much guaranteed a great pita.
Our family visited on a recent Friday evening. When we arrived, we were the only ones there. But by the time we had started our meal, the place was entirely packed — with what looked to be the arrival of a large group of college students.
There are three main booths inside the restaurant and a couple smaller tables, with an additional pair of tables outside. All told, there appeared to be seating accommodations for just under 40 people.
The restaurant gives off a fun and inviting vibe, with walls painted green and red featuring colorful characters based on cartoon-esque animals and food products.
Patrons step up to the service counter and order their choice of pita. Meat pitas are $6.49, veggie pitas are $5.59 and kids pitas are $2.99. You can make it a combo for an additional $1.95 (regular) or $2.25 (large) and receive a drink, and bag of chips or two cookies. The pita comes in both white and wheat bread.
Meat offerings included a variety of chicken choices, turkey, prime rib, Philly steak, ham, tuna and a club combination among others, while the veggie options revolved around things like falafel, hummus, black beans and various cheeses.
From there, you can pile on all your favorite toppings and sauces — and one choice of cheese (cheddar, Provolone, pepper jack or feta). The available toppings include hummus, shredded lettuce, romaine lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cucumbers, pickles, black olives, pepperoncinis, mushrooms, avocado and pineapple.
Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, you get to ponder over a selection of 15 sauces, including the likes of caesar, teriyaki, bbq, mayo, yellow mustard, honey mustard, ranch, horseradish dijon, ancho chipotle and a variety of vinaigrettes among others.
Typically, one might worry about trying to keep all your ingredients inside the actual pita. No worries here, as these pitas come with a special fold that rolls everything into one — almost like a burrito.
On our visit, the pitas we sampled included the Prime Rib, the Southwest Express, the Chicken Caesar and a Li’l Ham, off the kids menu. All were extremely delicious and pretty filling. Again, how could we go wrong when we were bulking our individual pitas up with items we specifically love? It’s a win-win-win-win-win (and more) proposition.
The Pita Pit is not just for lunch and dinner breaks, either. There is also a breakfast menu with a handful of options, with names such as Awakin’ With Bacon, Meat the Day and Morning Glory.
The next time your appetite tank is approaching running-on-empty status, consider popping by the Pita Pit for a quick refilling.
