CLOSED: Natural high: Healthy appetites welcome at Cafe Fresh

By Doug Fox - Daily Herald - | Jun 6, 2013

While looking over the heavy-on-healthy menu written on big boards behind the counter, we would not have been surprised to see a sign proclaiming: “Four out of five doctors recommend Cafe Fresh.”

After mowing our way through our meals, however, we would have reason to question such a sign — you know, if it existed in the first place — because certainly five out of five doctors would have given a ringing endorsement on the quality of cuisine at Cafe Fresh.

With every bite, I could almost feel my cholesterol levels decreasing. OK, that may be a slight stretch but eating healthy has rarely tasted quite this good.

Cafe Fresh is located in the southeast corner of Good Earth, the natural foods store in Orem. The restaurant is not really large, but there are nine tables of various sizes inside and another four on a pretty outside patio overlooking State Street. The restaurant was never really crowded during our Saturday afternoon visit, but there were a steady stream of customers, several picking up to-go orders.

Patrons order at the counter, which also contains the relatively compact food preparation area. The menu includes a variety of sandwiches, cold and hot wraps, salads, quesadillas, rice bowls and smoothies. Cafe Fresh boasts that it uses only “the freshest and most natural products available,” with many of the ingredients being organic and locally grown. Unless our taste buds took a complete leave of their senses, that certainly seemed to be the case.

One of our favorite entrees was the Cilantro Lime Stuffed Quesadilla. It came with cilantro lime chicken, Monterey Jack and feta cheeses, roasted corn, cilantro and pesto spread — all packed into a spinach quesadilla. Delicious! The order also came with fresh salsa and chips, and sour cream, which was great for dipping bite-sized portions of the quesadilla. It must also be noted that the salsa was superb, even better than that found at most local Mexican restaurants.

Another favorite was the Turkey Avo sandwich. This sandwich was so big we could literally barely get our mouths around it. It featured pulled turkey breast, avocado, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and a tasty sauce that was fitted between two extra thick slices of whole-grain wheat bread. This tasted fantastic. Our only quibble was that the bread, even though it was plenty thick, had the tendency to break apart and not stay in one piece. This didn’t affect the taste, of course, just made it a bit more difficult to maneuver the many morsels to their intended location. Sandwiches come with your choice of chips and salsa, or fresh fruit.

The Coconut Curry Rice Bowl was also a hit. The curry contained peas, carrots, potatoes and garbanzo beans served over brown rice.

For a cold wrap, we opted to try the Garden Explosion. This was quite the production as the whole wheat tortilla came power-packed with all kinds of vegetables. It included lettuce, tomato, marinated mushrooms, cucumbers, red bell peppers, red onion, red cabbage, carrots and veganaise. While I was lukewarm on this one, it was a definite favorite for my wife.

Our 4-year-old got a quesadilla off the kids menu, and he liked the simple combo of melted Monterey Jack on a whole wheat tortilla.

The smoothies were also a revelation. We tried two — the Simply Strawberry and Fruit-Elicious (featuring a collection of whatever fresh fruit is on hand at the time you place an order). Both were simply marvelous.

If anything, Cafe Fresh proves once and for all that you can have your healthy offerings and enjoy eating them, too.
