Try these Utah Valley options for gluten-free dining

By Kimberly Christenson, - Correspondent - | Mar 7, 2013

Eating out when you’re on a gluten-free diet can be tricky. Luckily, there are Utah Valley restaurant owners who are not only aware of their gluten-free patrons, but are proud of the delicious gluten-free options they have to offer. Whether you’re avoiding gluten out of choice or necessity, here are five places where you can enjoy a great gluten-free meal without feeling restricted.

Blue Lemon

Blue Lemon owners Lychelle and Aaron Day founded Blue Lemon on a clean-eating concept, so gluten-free options are not hard to find there. They include salmon, a variety of salads and artisan sandwiches — any of which can be prepared on a lettuce wrap instead of bread. Blue Lemon’s most popular gluten-free dish is the artichoke and tomato chicken entrée: A natural chicken breast topped with fire-roasted artichoke hearts and tomatoes, served with fingerling potatoes, sautéed spinach and a roasted red pepper sauce.

Guru’s Café

Guru’s is known for its healthy but hearty veggie bowls, which can be ordered with gluten-free rice. Any salad on the menu can easily be 100-percent gluten free (we love the blackened salmon salad). All three of the restaurant’s taco entrées (grilled shrimp, fish and traditional) can be served on a gluten-free corn tortilla. If you have room for dessert, try the Panna Cotta — it’s also gluten-free!

Cravings Bistro

Gluten free diners: Miss out on a melty grilled cheese sandwich no more. Cravings Bistro, a one-of-a-kind gourmet grilled cheese restaurant in American Fork, offers any sandwich on Udi’s gluten-free bread. Also, four of Cravings Bistro’s specialty soups — tomato basil, broccoli cheese, tortilla and cheesy potato are gluten free. In addition, Cravings is working on starting a gluten-free day, when gluten-free versions of meals that are typically off-limits to people who don’t eat gluten are offered one day a week (think macaroni and cheese).

Malawi’s Pizza

Every item on Malawi’s menu can be customized to accommodate gluten-free patrons. If you’re craving pizza, Malawi’s is a great option for a satisfying gluten-free crust. Any pizza on Malawi’s menu can be made on a gluten-free crust, including dessert pizzas. Also, Malawi’s has a menu of salads and pasta dishes, like the pesto chicken, which can be made with gluten-free noodles. We’re just glad our gluten-free friends don’t have to miss out on our favorite thing on the menu: Malawi’s berries and cream dessert pizza.

CLOSED: Jason’s Deli

When eating gluten-free foods, whole food salads are always a safe bet. Luckily, Jason’s Deli has a plentiful salad bar that won’t leave your stomach growling. Patrons can also order a gluten-free soup, a baked potato or a build-your-own sandwich (on Udi’s gluten-free bread). Kids can choose from a grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese or turkey and cheese sandwich, a hot dog or kid’s baked potato. Oh, and don’t forget the free ice cream and chocolate syrup. (Just pass on the cone, of course.)
