Wonderful cheese: Melty Way offers gourmet grilled cheese

By Doug Fox - Daily Herald - | Mar 15, 2013

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Melty Way storefront is now located at The Shops at South Town (10450 State St.) in Sandy.

Is there any comfort food more simple, yet so satisfying as a grilled cheese sandwich?

That basic premise seems to be the cornerstone belief of Melty Way, Grilled Cheese Gourmet. The Utah-based franchise, with diners in Midvale, American Fork and two others planned later this year in Sugarhouse and Orem, caters to the grilled cheese aficionado in each of us.

We visited the brand new American Fork location Saturday and the place was hopping. Make no mistake, Melty Way is a great place for the whole family. Why, there’s got to be a specialty grilled cheese that appeals to nearly every palate. Well, except for our very finicky 15-year-old daughter. But we figure that’s her problem!

There are no less than 17 different grilled cheese variations on the menu, including two kid’s choices. (One of the latter even features a Grilled PB&J — seriously, how cool is that?)

Orders are placed at the counter, and then patrons find their own table. It takes a few minutes to grill the sandwiches to golden brown perfection, and then the orders are delivered to your table.

In addition to grilled cheese, there are a few delicious soups — Tomato Basil and a rotating soup of the day option — as well as drinks, chips, cookies and dessert.

When we asked for suggestions, our cashier immediately suggested the Turkey and Bacon as a customer constant. She could not have been more correct. This was our clear favorite choice. The sandwich includes cheddar cheese, creamy havarti, roasted turkey and bacon. This was heaven on mouth.

We tried several different sandwiches, and the truth is, we loved them all. Sure, we are admitted suckers for grilled cheese, but these all delivered on our initial high expectations. Among our other favorites were The Classic (featuring just cheddar cheese), The Hawaiian (pepper jack cheese, ham and pineapple preserves) and The Italian (tomatoes, basil pesto, and both fresh and whole milk mozzarella).

Our 5-year-old was a fan of the grilled PB&J. And there were a bevy of tantalizing choices on the menu that we would look forward to trying in the future. Combinations like The Reuben, The Ham & Swiss, Turkey Cranberry, Three Cheese, The Mediterranean, and The Artichoke & Tomato. There is even an option titled the Classic Twist, where you choose your own cheese favorite, of 10 different choices, to melt inside two perfectly grilled pieces of Texas toast.

Speaking of the bread, Melty Way boasts that it is all baked fresh daily. And there are gluten-free options as well.

The soups were excellent, with the Tomato Basil being our fave. The soup of the day was Raviolini.

There are the typical variety of fountain soft drinks available, along with Coca-Cola from Mexico. We opted for the Wasatch Brewery root beer on tap, which was delightful. Our only quibble with the root beer was that by the time the foam dissipated, our cup was only three-quarters full — with refills costing an additional 99 cents.

For dessert, everyone enjoyed the ice cream sandwiches — featuring a scoop of ice cream between two cookies. These came in four different styles — vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and coconut — each with its own unique style of cookie. There was even a Sweet Grilled Cheese dessert combining whipped cream cheese and strawberry jam on cinnamon swirl bread and topped with powdered sugar. Have mercy!

The dining room is not huge, but includes a dozen or so tables that seat four each. One thing to prepare for — the diner is quite loud. It seemed the main decibel culprit was the aluminum chairs always grating on the diner floor. With the busy nature of the restaurant on Saturday, combined with many young patrons, the sound of chairs noisily skipping across the floor was ubiquitous throughout our visit.

However, if you fancy yourself a grilled cheese connoisseur, Melty Way is fun for the whole family.
