‘Wiching hour: The time is right for a sandwich

By Elyssa Andrus - Correspondent - | May 2, 2013

There is something incredibly satisfying about the simplicity of a sandwich. No fork? No problem. Don’t have an hour to wait at a sit-down restaurant?

No worries: Sandwiches can be slowly savored or eaten on the go. (Just don’t bring too much dipping sauce when traveling or you may not make it through airport security, a la Liz Lemon in NBC’s “30 Rock” episode “Sandwich Day.”)

There are sandwich shops in every nook and cranny of Utah County, and here are just a few of our favorites:

Cravings Bistro

Talk about sweet and savory: Twin sisters Angela Wilson and Alisha Nuttall own Cravings Bistro and Cravings Alisha’s Cupcakes respectively. Stop by American Fork’s Cravings Bistro for a grown-up take on grilled cheese sandwiches such as the A.B.C. It’s made with Granny Smith green apple slices, candied bacon, cheddar cheese and a caramelized red-onion mayonnaise. You can top off your meal by heading eight minutes down the road to Pleasant Grove’s Cravings Alisha’s Cupcakes for a sweet treat.

Cubby’s Chicago Beef

Some people will care that Cubby’s uses grass-fed, hormone-and-antibiotic-free beef in its burgers, sandwiches and salads. Others will just care that the beef is very, very tasty. Either way, order a sandwich like the Rip City Tri Tip, a steak sandwich with bacon, caramelized onions, tri-tip steak, barbecue sauce and garlic butter. You can thank us later.

Gandolfo’s Deli

In 1989, Craig Gandolph founded the first Gandolfo’s New York Delicatessen in Provo. Since then, the deli chain has exploded, with franchises throughout the West and as far away as Florida and Michigan. Gandolfo’s signature sandwiches are heroes loaded with meats and toppings. For example, with pastrami, marinated mushrooms, cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan and veggies served on a sourdough bun, the restaurant’s Knuckle Sandwich is a surprisingly pleasant experience.

DP Cheesesteaks

DP Cheesesteaks focuses on doing one thing right: Bringing Philly-style sandwiches to us poor schlubs out West in Utah. Whether you like your cheesesteak old school with Cheez Whiz and onions, or fiery with jalapeños and hot banana peppers, this restaurant has a sandwich for you. You can even stick to a high-protein diet by having any cheesesteak served on romaine lettuce instead of a freshly baked roll.

Which Wich

This national chain is a mecca for true sandwich lovers, with a dizzying selection of “wiches” to choose from. You can customize the heck out of your order, choosing your own veggies, breads and condiments for any sandwich. What’s your pleasure: A Hula served with ham, pineapple and melted cheese, or a Surf & Turf combo of crab and roast beef? You’ll find both and much, much more at Which Wich. Grab one of the restaurant’s Sharpies and a printed paper bag to order on. If you can’t come up with the perfect sandwich, you have only yourself to blame.
