The outside of Big Daddy's Pizza in Pleasant Grove.

If you like pizza — and let’s face it, who doesn’t — you owe it to yourself to check out Big Daddy’s Pizza in Pleasant Grove.

We had been unfamiliar with the Big Daddy’s brand before happening across the Pleasant Grove location, and were somewhat surprised to learn there were nine different franchises in operation north of Point of the Mountain, as well as three in Colorado and another due to open in Las Vegas.

Big Daddy’s may be named for a man, but we can vouch that there are enough different varieties of pizza and sides available that every member of the family should be able to find something to savor.

Do not plan to dine in at Big Daddy’s — it is strictly a pickup or delivery franchise. But this also makes it a perfect option for those stop-in-and-take-it-home kind of nights. Besides, it’s not always feasible — or prudent — to bring the whole family along for a dining-out experience, especially if you have a couple younger rambunctious boys, like we do, who seem to feign complete ignorance when you hiss the term “restaurant manners” under and over your breath multiple times throughout the evening.

We stopped by Big Daddy’s on a recent Friday night and the place was hoppin’. A later-than-expected night at work lent itself nicely to the “stop in and take it home” mentality. It appeared that many others had the exact same idea.

You can phone in an order, of course, or opt for delivery, but having never been before, we wanted to make sure we understood all the various menu offerings with an in-person visit. The downside of that, naturally, is the extra time it takes to wait for your pizzas to cook. To somewhat alleviate that dilemma, Big Daddy’s offers ready-to-go cheese and pepperoni pizzas for $5. If you’re willing to wait a little bit longer, it offers four specialty pizzas on a special express promise that it will be ready in 10 minutes. Those pizzas include the Chile Verde, the Coronary Meat Feast, the Veggie Lovers Special and the Alfredo Chicken.

We sampled several different pizzas on our visit, and the favorite of the adults was the BBQ Chicken. It contained mozzarella cheese, chicken and rings of tangy barbecue sauce baked in a pie of delicious proportions. We loved this offering and would definitely order it again.

Coming in a close second were the Coronary and Combo selections. The Coronary is a melange of pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, beef and breakfast bacon. Be still my heart!

The Combo pizza contains pepperoni, Italian sausage, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and olives. If you like lots of different toppings, you will certainly not go astray at Big Daddy’s.

We couldn’t resist trying a dessert pizza as well, opting for the Cinnamon Strudel. Naturally, it was delish — and a favorite of the kids.

We did sample an order of wings — but found them a bit too spicy for our taste. Admittedly, we are not hot-and-spicy types, so others may find them to be just what they’re looking for.

All in all, Big Daddy’s Pizza proved to be pretty perfect for those “don’t want to cook, don’t want to dine out” type of nights.
