Lunch Ladies: Goodwood Barbecue Company
Hustling through stores. Bustling through crowds. Rustling of shopping bags. Muscling through traffic. Tussling through the lunch hour? We sure hope not!
Sure, the holiday season can be hectic, and sadly the real meaning of Christmas often gets lost in the shuffle. But if you can’t even step back from all the stress, catch your breath and refocus, then you’ve probably entered the holiday danger zone.
And that’s where your friendly Lunch Ladies would like to step in and host an official holiday intervention! We’d like to recommend a lunch spot conveniently located amid all the sweeping shopping madness where you can sneak away from the chaos, regroup and find a great bite of grub while you are at it.
The Lunch Ladies recently had lunch at Goodwood Barbecue Company. We were so impressed with every aspect of our outing!
Upon first entry, we shook off the cold, and were quickly greeted by friendly faces and welcoming words. We were seated instantaneously, since the restaurant is strategically designed to allow ample seating and tables. Our friendly waiter was more than willing to answer our numerous questions including, “What exactly are “Burnt Ends”? And why does the coleslaw have peanut butter in it?”
After perusing the many tempting options, we decided to place our orders, then sit back and relax while our hot, savory meals were prepared.
We began to chat, discuss holiday plans, and unwind. We had anticipated more of a wait, but before we knew it our fresh, sweet-smelling meals were placed before us. Goodwood was delivering on all counts!
Here is what the Lunch Ladies enjoyed:
Gabby: Combination Platter $10.49 +50 cents extra for a Premium Side
I couldn’t decide what meat to get, so I decided to give in and get the Combination Platter so I could choose two meats. After the waiter’s excellent description of burnt ends being some of the most flavorful and tender part of a smoked brisket, I couldn’t resist selecting that as well as pulled pork. For my sides I chose steak fries and Ruth’s pecan sweet potatoes (a premium side). First, let’s talk about the meat! Amazing! The burnt ends were cooked to perfection, and had a great smoky flavor that I loved! The pulled pork was tender and tasty. Neither needed the BBQ sauce, but were great with it as well. The steak fries were delicious, crispy and plentiful. And the sweet potatoes … wow! They were sweet, but not too sweet, completely peeled and evenly mixed, allowing the great flavors to be spread throughout. And the pecans were the perfect touch! It was a consistently fantastic meal, start to finish, every ingredient playing its perfect part.
Lyndsi: Smoked Turkey Sandwich $9.29 + 50 cents extra for a Premium Side
I know everyone is probably sick of turkey, but trust me, the sandwich at Goodwood is worth having it again. It is piled high with smoked turkey and topped with melted Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and a delicious herb mayo. I added a little of the Sweet & Sassy barbeque sauce to mine and it was perfect. I substituted sweet potato fries as a premium side but ordered them without the cinnamon and sugar they normally are served with. Cinnamon and sugar fries with marshmallow sauce just seemed a little too sweet for me today, but I bet it is delicious. So, the moral of the story is once your turkey hangover is gone, you have to go try this sandwich.
Sylvia: Sliced Brisket Salad $9.29 Iced Tea $2.49
This isn’t your normal barbecue joint with picnic tables and bench seats. Goodwood is your cozy restaurant-style joint. I had checked the menu out online so already knew I wanted the brisket salad. It came with two generous juicy slabs of brisket on mixed greens that were topped with corn, roasted bell peppers, tomatoes and scallions all topped with cheddar cheese, tortilla strips and the house “sassy” barbecue ranch dressing. Very tasty with a nice corn muffin on the side. The next time I come I will skip the iced tea, too pricey for me.
Jennette: Double-Dipped Chicken Crispers $10.49, Diet Coke $2.49
I have to admit that Chicken Crispers are my favorite item to order at places like Chili’s or Texas Roadhouse. I’m not a steak fan, so I always order chicken, and Chicken Crispers make me feel like a kid at heart. So when I saw Chicken Crispers on the menu, I had to order them. The three fresh-dipped Chicken Crispers are double-battered in a special season mix and are quite delicious. They are served with your choice of sides; I went with steak fries and coleslaw. I saw on the menu that there was a peanut warning on the coleslaw; when I asked what that was, I was informed that the coleslaw is made with peanut butter. Intriguing? Well it happens to be delicious. The cabbage was fresh and crisp, and the sauce had a wonderful flavor. I highly recommend ordering the coleslaw if you have the opportunity to do so. Yes, I ordered a Diet Coke, which was good enough that I drank three glasses!
Our lunch was not only excellent food, it was an unspoiled sanctuary from all the insanity that it is so easy to get sucked into. So consider this recommendation a small offering from the Lunch Ladies. If you find yourself out and about this holiday season, shopping ’til you are about to drop, stop before you collapse, hobble into wonderful Goodwood, and whisper, “Sanctuary.” They’ll know what to do.
