Lunch Ladies: The Sandwich Bowl

By Gabrielle Harris - Daily Herald - | Feb 2, 2014

Super Bowl Sunday! Can’t you feel the excitement? I can barely contain myself. My hometown Denver Broncos are competing against the Seattle Seahawks, and I am hoping for the game of the century!

Super Sandwich Bowl

Peyton Manning will hopefully lead the fearsome Broncos to their first Super Bowl victory since 1999. I have been waiting over a decade for this moment, and I plan to savor every second!

Super Bowl Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year, regardless of who is playing. A feast of snacks, treats, and great times with family and friends is always on the menu. So when you are lucky enough to throw in your favorite team! Wow! Best. Day. Ever!

The buzz in the atmosphere, the pulse of electricity in the countdown ’til kickoff, reverberates in every moment of prep, until that final second when it all begins. The roar of the crowd, the sweat, the tears, the shouts, and the cheers all combine in a symphony of excitement.

And this year, this special year, my Denver Broncos will be leading the way! OK, to say I am ecstatic is an understatement! So what does all this have to do with going out to lunch, you might ask? Well, in honor of the greatest competition that ever existed (at least according to this Lunch Lady, not Jennette, our resident soccer fan), we decided to have our own little competition. The Super Sandwich Bowl!

We decided to compare sandwiches at both Jimmy John’s and Which Wich to determine a Super Sandwich victor! Each Lunch Lady will compare both meals, then cast her final vote.

Here’s how our competition went:

Lunch Ladies Sandwich Bowl – Gabby

Gabby: Jimmy John’s — #7 Smoked Ham Club (Unwich), $5.65

Which Wich — Bac-Hammon (Lettuce Wrap), $5.50

Two unique lettuce wraps, both delicious. Jimmy John’s Unwich has a generous portion of flavorful smoked ham and provolone cheese with just the right amount of Hellman’s mayonnaise. Then comes crisp, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. These tasty ingredients are tightly wrapped in cool, refreshing lettuce. I enjoyed every bite! Now for Which Wich, with so many options! I ordered a Bac-Hammon which comes with bacon and ham, and then customized mine with hummus, provolone, and a variety of vegetables. It was oozing with great ingredients, and I mean oozing! It was fabulous, but it was wrapped in so many layers of lettuce that I could barely fit it in my mouth. I loved every bite, but I felt like I had to work for every bite. Both are great options; choosing a winner is like picking between a team with a great defense and one with a great offense, but when said and done, I have to go with Jimmy John’s. Tried and true, Jimmy John’s knows how to wrap that lettuce right!

Super Sandwich Winner: Jimmy John’s. Super Bowl Prediction: Broncos 28-17

Lunch Ladies Sandwich Bowl – Lyndsi

Lyndsi: Jimmy John’s — #6 Vegetarian, $4.65

Which Wich — Tomato and Avocado, $5.50

When it comes to a vegetarian sandwich, substance is very important. I tried to make my two sandwiches as similar as possible so I could judge them fairly. I chose the vegetarian sandwich at Jimmy Johns; it is made up of provolone cheese, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, avocado spread and mayo. My favorite part is the avocado spread; it’s layered between the cheese slices! I then tried to copy the ingredients as much as I could at Which Wich, so I went with: provolone cheese, cucumber, spinach, tomato, avocado, onion and mayo. I love the options at Which Wich, and I would have added many more things to my sandwich if I wasn’t trying to compare equally. I will say I love both places but when it comes down to it, I have to choose Which Wich as my victor. It has many more options so I don’t have to have the same thing every time, and I can add more to make it feel more satisfying.

Super Sandwich Winner: Which Wich. Super Bowl Prediction: Broncos 24-21

Lunch Ladies Sandwich Bowl – Sylvia

Sylvia: Jimmy John’s — #9 Italian Night Club (Unwich), $5.65

Which Wich — Italian Muffuletta + Avocado (Lettuce Wich), and medium drink, $8.90

Phew, this competition was fierce. Both of my lettuce wraps were packed full of really tasty salami, ham, super fresh lettuce and tomato, then sprinkled with a vinaigrette. But the Which Wich lettuce wrap nosed ahead with its delicious Olive Salad, and I was able to add on banana peppers, spinach, black olives, mushrooms and avocado. Yes this ‘Wich was over the top with flavor, becoming my winner!

Super Sandwich Winner: Which Wich. Super Bowl Prediction: Broncos 16-13

Lunch Ladies Sandwich Bowl – Jennette

Jennette: Jimmy John’s — #5 Vito, chips and drink $7.68

Which Wich — Italian Grinder, chips, and drink $9.44

My favorite type of sandwich is the Italian. It probably has to do with my love of provolone cheese. This is the only kind of cheese I like on sandwiches. I’m weird, I know. The Vito from Jimmy John’s wins this battle of the Italian sandwiches. You can add just about anything to the sandwich at Which Wich, but the Vito has the classic and simple taste of genoa salami, provolone cheese, capicola, onion, lettuce, tomato and a real tasty Italian vinaigrette. The bread at Jimmy John’s is also very good. Nice and chewy and a little crusty on the outside. But now let’s get to the real challenge; who has the better Diet Coke? Both are really good, but I am voting for Which Wich. The Diet Coke has a richer taste there. It also has pellet ice, not sure that has anything to do with the taste, but it does make it better somehow.

Super Sandwich Winner: Jimmy John’s. Super Bowl Prediction: Broncos 24-10

So looks like the Lunch Ladies couldn’t agree on a clear-cut winner for our Super Sandwich Bowl. But at least we could all agree that we are big fans of both Jimmy John’s and Which Wich. And most importantly, we all agree on the Broncos winning the Super Bowl! So let’s go Peyton! Game on!
