Real men don’t eat quiche — or so the old cliche goes.

If that saying were to be taken at face value — stubbled or otherwise — then Rhonda’s Pies in American Fork would definitely need a sign on the front door requiring the immediate surrender of all man cards. That’s because despite all the tasty, rich pies available at the small, understated restaurant, the real star on the menu — at least for our party — was the quiche.

There are three different styles of quiche available and we sampled two of them. My personal favorite was the Bacon Quiche, which also included spinach, tomatoes, onions and cheddar cheese (and, of course, eggs). The bacon-and-cheddar cheese combination was hard to beat for me, and I enjoy little doses of healthy spinach (especially if offset by bacon). My wife, however, strongly preferred the Sausage Quiche, which included mushrooms, onions and Swiss cheese. I could see her point, and in all honesty, both quiche varieties were fantastic.

The third quiche option is the Veggie, which features spinach, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. We didn’t sample this, but it still sounded good.

The quiche is available for $2.59 per slice or $14.99 for a whole 9-inch pie.

We should probably point out that Rhonda’s is not solely a pie shop. Other highlights for us were the Take ‘N’ Bake Meat Pies. They come in three varieties — beef, chicken and veggie — and are $25.99 per dozen or $13.99 per half dozen. We took six home, with a mixture of beef and chicken, and they were extremely delicious as well. The flaky crust browned up nicely, and the ingredients of corn, carrots, peas and potatoes in a delicious creamy filling — in addition to the chicken or beef — oozed out onto the cooking pan. Yummy!

We sampled the Tomato Basil Soup, which had a great flavor, but was extra thick — perhaps a bit too thick for our preference.

Another highlight was the Wacky Macky Pie — basically macaroni and cheese inside a turnover — for children. It also comes with a cheesy topping that can be poured over the turnover or used for dipping.

The bountiful selection of pies made it difficult to settle on just a couple to sample. Eventually, however, we had to make a decision and so we opted for the Peanut Butter and Turtle cream pies. Let us just say this: The pies were so rich, you’re lucky to don’t have to prove royal lineage just to order one. They were best consumed in small slices — especially after such a hearty meal. They were very filling.

There are 32 different pies on the menu — some being seasonal — and all may not be available when you visit. But there are a wide variety of choices, which can either be ordered by the slice or 5- or 10-inch full pies.

As for the restaurant, Rhonda’s is a cozy little place on an easy-to-overlook smaller street in American Fork — but just barely off Main Street. There are eight tables (seating four patrons each) inside, that are fairly close together. From our visit, it appeared as if the dine-in and takeout traffic was about 50-50. And things got pretty busy during our Thursday evening visit.

So whether you are looking for a casual dining experience or prefer the comfort of cooking quality food at home, Rhonda’s Pies is worth checking out.
