KFC gets boneless right, finally, with extra crispy
This week I reached out for a piece of Extra Crispy Boneless, the newest entry on the “Boneless” board at the No. 1 chicken shack, KFC, with 17,000 restaurants under its wing worldwide.
Last year, KFC introduced Original Recipe Boneless, a fillet of chicken dunked in the Colonel’s blend of 11 secret herbs and spices, and pressure-fried to a soft mush. You remember those asinine commercials: “I ate the bones!” I wasn’t knocked out by the product, or the push. Now it’s Extra Crispy Boneless to the rescue.
Here’s the blueprint: a boneless slab of either white- or dark-meat chicken, dredged in lightly seasoned flour, like shoes on the back of a newlywed’s car, and deep fried. Total calories: 250 (for one piece Extra Crispy Boneless dark meat). Fat grams: 14. Sodium: 850 mg. Dietary fiber: 1 g. Protein: 21 g. Carbs: 11 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $2.49, including an order of KFC’s unsung potato wedges, all tucked into an innovative Go Cup that fits snugly in your car’s cup holder.
Make sure to take out the $17.89 in coins you’ve got in the cup holder first. Otherwise, one hard turn and it’s crumbs and wedges everywhere.
Insider tip: The Go Cup has a clear plastic lid. Remove it as quickly as possible. The lid traps moist heat, which softens the crispy chicken skin. It’s doing the potato wedges no favor, either.
Extra Crispy Boneless also has a white-meat fillet, same price, but a little lighter on its feet — only 200 calories and 8 fat grams.
Ask yourself two questions: Extra Crispy Boneless or Original Recipe Boneless? White or dark meat? The smart plays are Extra Crispy Boneless, and definitely dark meat. You’re eating fried either way, so white meat isn’t your escape hatch from guilt.
I tried both white and dark Extra Crispy Boneless. The white-meat fillet was surprisingly tender, unlike typical fast-food chicken breasts that are drier than Godwin’s funky deer jerky on “Duck Dynasty.”
The Extra Crispy Boneless dark-meat fillet was super-juicy and delicious — really good stuff, KFC! The breading was glistening and crispy. I definitely heard every bite; fried chicken should make some noise. I was lucky, though — I caught a batch of chicken right out of the fryer. Fried chicken that’s been sitting … better luck next time.
The crunchiest fried chicken in the market? Go to Church’s and order Spicy. Warning: It’s going to get loud in your mouth.
KFC’s Extra Crispy Boneless is also available as a 2 Piece Combo, with two pieces of chicken, one side, a biscuit and a soft drink for $4.99. Remember, KFC is a Pepsi joint — no squawking when you get to the self-service soda machine and can’t find Coke.
Or try the 10 Piece Favorites Bucket for $12.99. The 10 Piece Favorites Bucket lets you mix ‘n’ match Boneless with Original Recipe, bone-in and grilled. Just as long as it adds up to 10 pieces — just chicken. Good selection, not such a good price. Where’s my bulk discount?
So what’s the KFC’s Extra Crispy Boneless and KFC’s Extra Crispy Tenders? Far as I can tell, Extra Crispy Boneless pieces are larger than tenders. And you know our motto in the drive-thru: Less is not more. More is more.
