CLOSED: Get Iggy with it

What do you do when your sweet husband, through no fault of his own, stands you up for your lunch date?

While some people would simply reroute their plans and navigate their way through a drive-thru for lunch, I decided to continue with my plans and headed over to Iggy’s Sports Grill in Orem.

Solo dining isn’t for everyone and up until a few years ago, I really didn’t enjoy walking into a nice restaurant and announcing I would only need a table for one. It wasn’t until I was a full-time tourist living in Japan that I began to embrace the concept of dining alone. Wanting to experience the exotic restaurants in Tokyo, I learned just how lovely a quiet, leisurely lunch or dinner on my own could be.

Lunching on my own at Iggy’s, I actually found my attention occupied by all the social media feeds on my phone — time to catch up. Somehow I managed to pry my eyes away from the ginormous TVs that fill the restaurant’s central bar area — something that would have been more difficult had one of the NCAA March Madness games been scheduled for that afternoon.

Once seated I began flipping through the vast menu. And when I say vast, I mean it. This menu features multiple pages filled with all sorts of dining temptations — appetizers, burgers, soups and salads, sandwiches, pastas, pizzas, seafood, Southwest items, signature entrees, desserts and beverages. It’s just so hard to choose.

To help tide me over while narrowing down my decision, I was presented with a deliciously warm, garlicy crusted loaf of bread and directed to the bottle of Chili Water on the table. Dipping that bread into the sweet/spicy sauce is one of my favorite indulgences at Iggy’s.

Finally I decided my lunch would consist of the Prime Rib Sandwich accompanied by crispy onion rings. I also splurged and added two coconut shrimp, creating my own lunch version of Surf ‘n’ Turf.

Before diving into the sandwich, I had to test out the onion rings, dipped in Iggy’s own barbecue-rich fry sauce. These onion rings, hands-down, had the best flavor of any onion rings I’ve eaten in recent memory. They were perfectly flavored and crisped to perfection. While the fry sauce was not needed, it was a kicky complement to the side dish.

Next came a quick taste of the coconut shrimp. What would make these large prawns even better? Chili Water, of course!

Now on to that Prime Rib Sandwich. Served between toasted slices of bread, the succulent prime rib was draped in melty Swiss cheese and tender slivers of caramelized onion. Juicy and tender, the meat was perfectly cooked, making it easy to devour the first half of the sandwich. The other half? It was quickly boxed up along with a few onion rings and the second shrimp. My hubby might not have been able to join me for lunch, but that didn’t mean he’d have to miss out on this tasty meal.

Since I did actually only eat half my meal, I felt justified in ordering something from the dessert menu. After considering a few options, my waitress recommended the cheesecake. “Make mine with raspberry sauce,” I said.

The huge slice of cheesecake did, in fact, live up to the hype. I particularly enjoyed the thick flavorful graham cracker crust. No cardboard or crumbly crust here. My only slight criticism of my entire meal came in the form of the dollops of whipped cream that adorned my cheesecake. Hoping for real whipped cream, it tasted a bit too much like Cool Whip for my taste. That minor complaint aside, my dessert was the sweet conclusion to a delicious meal and overall pleasant solo dining experience.
