Lobster bites are back and better at Long John Silver’s
This week I reached out for a “shooter pack” of Norway Lobster Bites, new for a limited time only at America’s No. 1 seafood drive-thru, Long John Silver’s, with 1,250 restaurants from sea to shining seafood.
Wait, didn’t Long John Silver’s have Lobster Bites back in ’09? So how can something old be new again? Because this time, you’re really biting into actual lobster, no strings or semantics attached.
The first time around, what Long John Silver’s called “lobster” was actually langostinos — a crustacean commonly called a “squat lobster.” Call it whatever — even if you squint and swallow fast, a langostino isn’t a lobster.
Now Long John Silver’s is back with Norway Lobster Bites, made from the meat of langoustines, a true lobster. These lobsters are caught in the wild North Atlantic off Norway. They’re the real deal. Langostinos … langoustines … is this a spelling bee, or lunch?
Here’s the Norway Lobster Bites blueprint: 100 percent Norway lobster tail meat, lightly breaded and deep-fried, served in creative new packaging.
Total calories: 230 (for the 3.2-ounce shooter size). Fat grams: 9. Sodium: 520 mg. Carbs: 24 g. Protein: 13 g. Dietary fiber: 2 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $1.99. For lobster? Seriously? The larger “snack box” is $3.99.
Long John Silver’s is stepping up its game with a new slogan — “Think Fish” — and higher-quality products, like Dippin’ Fish Strips and Ciabatta Jack Sandwiches.
Norway Lobster Bites are bits and pieces (great song by The Dave Clark 5) of North Atlantic lobster, a big hit on European seafood menus. The lobsters are shelled by hand. The pieces are dipped in buttery-flavored breading and fried in vegetable oil — no trans fats at Long John Silver’s.
Norway Lobster Bites are a whole lot better-tasting than the “sort of like lobster” Lobster Bites from five years ago. The new Lobster Bites have a legit lobster taste. The breading is crunchy. No dipping in butter necessary — the flavor is built into the breading. All in all, pretty good deal. Treat yourself to some lobster for two bucks. I’d get the shooter size as a side dish for a regular Long John Silver’s meal. I already do that with clam strips.
The Norway Lobster Bites packaging is really cool. They come in a red cardboard box shaped like a lobster. They are what you eat.
Now, that’s truth is advertising. What if other fast-food chains adopted this idea? Domino’s would have a pizza box shaped like a pizza. You know, that’s actually a pretty good idea. There’d be less sliding around inside the box on the ride home. KFC’s bucket would have drumsticks that served as handles. And McDonald’s could put its McNuggets in a box shaped like …
OK, maybe this idea wouldn’t work all the time. It would be hard to make a McNuggets box shaped like disgusting, pink, gloppy slime.
