Discretion proves the better part of flavor at Farr’s Fresh
You don’t have to go far for a fresh new take on dessert-disguised-as-breakfast decadence.
Heading into the final week of our 6-year-old’s debut Jr. Jazz basketball season, we were looking for a fun way to celebrate following the game. In a flash of serendipity, a coupon mailer showed up at the house around then and one ad caught our attention. It was touting an all-you-can-eat waffles and ice cream special at Farr’s Fresh in American Fork for $4.99. What’s not to love about that?
The waffles and ice cream special is only offered on Saturday mornings between 8 and 11 a.m. — and it’s something unique to the American Fork Farr’s Fresh location. And with an 8 a.m. basketball game, the three-hour window would accommodate our post-game goals perfectly.
When we arrived at Farr’s about 9:30 a.m., there were only a couple other patrons already there. But by the time we left an hour later, the pace had really picked up, making it almost hard to find a seat. An employee who appeared to be the manager told us that the store had only started this deal in the past month or two.
“It might not be the healthiest (breakfast option),” he said with a smile, “but it’s probably one of the better ones!”
We couldn’t agree more.
One important distinction should be noted in regards to the “all you can eat” label in this instance. The waffles and toppings are all you can eat, but you receive one smaller cup to fill with ice cream (or frozen custard, sorbet, yogurt, etc.) from one of the dispenser stations. This slightly dashed my preconceived notion of unlimited domes of ice cream topping numerous waffles. (Hey, a guy can dream can’t he?) But I found that by loading my little cup as high as possible that I could still ration it equitably for two waffles — which proved to be all I could eat anyway.
There were 13 different flavors of frozen goodness available to choose from and I loaded up on English Toffee yogurt, Salty Caramel ice cream and Vanilla frozen custard. Others in our family group opted for Cake Batter ice cream, Cookies and Cream yogurt, Pineapple and Raspberry sorbets, Strawberry yogurt and Chocolate frozen custard.
If you thought the ice cream selections were a free for all, you should have seen the toppings. Farr’s Fresh is typically one of those pay-by-the-weight establishments — but with toppings being all you can eat, most everyone threw caution to the wind. Our youngest, a 5-year-old, took things to the extreme of not even touching his waffle. He just ate toppings with his small cup of frozen goodness.
After a few forkfuls of her concoction — which featured a waffle topped with Cake Batter ice cream, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup bits, caramel/chocolate cups, M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces and gummy bears — our 16-year-old daughter proclaimed, “This is the best-thing ever!”
While the kids went to town on all the sweets possible, my wife and I were a bit more reserved in our choices. I put a few of my favorite things on the side, and would mix them in with the occasional bite, just to experiment. Invariably, though, I found discretion to be the better form of flavor. What I enjoyed most was the simple waffle-and-ice cream combo topped with fresh strawberries and slightly drizzled in caramel sauce. Divine!
My wife took a slightly more healthy approach by selecting a variety of sorbets, and simply adding strawberries and hot fudge.
At meal’s end, I perused the tattered remnants of our breakfast adventure, plastic foam plates covered in melted ice cream, stray topping bits and leftover sauces — and knew that we had exacted our money’s worth on this celebratory trip.
