Drive-Thru Gourmet: Garlic Parmesan Pizzas please even traditionalists

By Ken Hoffman - | May 8, 2014

This week I reached out for a trio of Garlic Parmesan Pizzas from the world’s No. 1 pie slinger, Pizza Hut, with 6,000 restaurants in the U.S., and double that to the four corners.

Usually, when the Hut or Domino’s unleashes a new pizza in several varieties, I try one and make passing reference to the others. This time, I immersed myself in my craft. I had all three: Chicken, Bacon & Tomato; Roasted Veggie; Five Cheese Please. It was a long weekend — a three-day, three-pizza binge.

All three pies feature a creamy garlic sauce laced with Parmesan and Romano cheeses, and a crust made crustier with more Parmesan and a Parmesan-parsley blend. Sounds like the Parmesan sales team scored big with Pizza Hut buyers.

Here are the three breakdowns, direct from the Hut’s PowerPoint:

Chicken Bacon & Tomato: A savory toasted Parmesan crust topped with creamy garlic, Parmesan & Romano sauce, tender all-white-meat chicken, hardwood-smoked bacon, diced Roma tomatoes and sprinkled with a Parmesan cheese and parsley blend.

Roasted Veggie: The same crust and sauce, topped with diced Roma tomatoes and roasted vegetables, including green bell peppers, white mushrooms and sweet red onions.

Five Cheese Please: That same crust and sauce again, covered with whole-milk mozzarella, provolone and white cheddar. Plus Parmesan and Romano … that’s five cheeses, if you pleases.

Total calories: 290 (for a large slice of Chicken Bacon & Tomato). Fat grams: 12. Sodium: 590 mg. Carbs: 33 g. Dietary fiber: 2 g. Protein: 14 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $10. The Five Cheese Please nutritionals are similar, with Roasted Veggie a little skinnier.

Pizza Hut’s new Garlic Parmesan Pizzas are … different. And the difference is plain to see: There’s no tomato sauce. So these pizzas don’t have the traditional red (tomato sauce), white (mozzarella) and green (basil) color scheme — which happens to be the three colors of the Italian flag.

Instead of tomato sauce, Pizza Hut ladles these pies with a smooth garlic-cheese sauce. And there’s no mistakin’ the garlic. It’s there, first bite to last. Tic Tac, anyone?

The question becomes, Are you ready for a pizza that looks and tastes different from your regular pizza? I’m a pizza traditionalist — I usually order a plain cheese pie. It’s never done me wrong. I like my pizza with tomato sauce first thing. When I don’t see red … I see red.

But these Garlic Parmesan Pizzas surprised me. It had enough familiar pizza pizzazz, with a breathtaking jolt of garlic. Butter may make it better, but garlic makes it even better still. Add bacon to the mix, and loosen your belt — you’re going to be here awhile.

For a change of pace, I didn’t mind — heck, I positively enjoyed — Pizza Hut’s Garlic Parmesan Pizzas. The Chicken Bacon & Tomato has the most business, but the Roasted Veggie and Five Cheese Please have something positive to say, too. All three are for a limited time only, but I’ve got a hunch they’ll stick around for the long haul.

Starting at $4.32/week.
