From the web: BYU’s Vocal Point pays tribute to ‘Newsies’
The gentlemen of Brigham Young University’s Vocal Point have been wooing audiences for more than two decades now with their synchronized dancing, spot-on harmonies and catchy beat-boxing. Tackling covers of everything from pop songs to classic hits and religious music, the group has earned itself a tight-knit group of fans and supporters from across the nation.
A big bump in popularity for the group came in 2011, when they were featured on NBC’s “The Sing-Off.” Though they only placed fifth on the show, that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to grow their fan base and music through other means, including a highly successful YouTube channel.
Their latest video, posted just two days ago, features a medley of songs from Disney’s hit film turned Broadway musical, “Newsies.” Released in 1992, just a year after Vocal Point came into being, “Newsies” tells the story of the newsboy strike of 1899. Set up as storyline speckled with song, the show has long been a hit due to its fantastic casting and incredible music.
Vocal Point didn’t just tackle the music from “Newsies” in their new video though. They tackled almost all of the music from “Newsies” in just one, four-minute video take. As if that doesn’t sound complicated enough, throw in costume changes and 85 BYU student performers who have never practiced together before.
The results are a fantastic, feel-good video you’ll have to see to believe. For another taste of Vocal Point’s catchy YouTube hits, check out this video of the group tackling Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.”
