Have it your way by ordering off the secret menu at local eateries

By Jennifer Durrant daily Herald - | Nov 27, 2014

Have you ever wanted to be part of a secret, underground society?

Ever want to knock on a hidden doorway and whisper a code word to gain entrance into an amazing new club?

Do you ever claim that your shortcut is actually the “Secret Cool Guy Way?”

Do your homemade meals always contain a secret ingredient that you never divulge?

Do you dream of receiving an envelope one day stamped with “Top Secret?”

If any of these ideas describe you, then I have a fantastic treat: A list of the secret and not-so-secret menu items you can order from your favorite fast food restaurants.

So to prevent an overload of turkey leftovers this weekend, make a fast food run and order up one of these hidden menu items.

In-N-Out Burger

This popular burger joint is known for more than its amazingly fresh food — no frozen meat, fresh-cut fries. In-N-Out is legendary for its “not-so-secret” menu items, namely “Animal Style.”

What is “Animal Style”? A delicious combination of mustard-grilled hamburger patties smothered with pickles, extra spread and grilled onions. “Animal Style” Fries, too, with the addition of melted cheese, are also a great, gooey side for your burger.

Other secret menu items include the 3×3 and 4×4 burgers which are either three or four patties stacked between two buns, piled with the traditional toppings; the protein burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun; the grilled cheese; and even the vanilla-chocolate-and-strawberry-swirled Neapolitan Shake.

Starbucks

Instead of ordering your traditional Venti Mocha Latte or Grande Iced Americano coffee during your next trip through Starbucks, try one of a large number of secret coffee, and even coffee-free drink combinations.

For the coffee lovers there is the Twix Frappuccino — a Caramel Frapp spiked with extra pumps of caramel and hazelnut syrups, java chips, and caramel and mocha drizzle atop a dollop of whipped cream. Or try the seasonal Pumpkin Pie Frapp, which further enhances the popular Pumpkin Spice Frapp by adding a couple pumps of Cinnamon Dolce Syrup, whipped cream blended in and topped with Cinnamon Dolce Sprinkles.

Non-coffee drinkers will love the Butterbeer Frappuccino. Enhance a traditional Vanilla Bean Frapp with caramel and toffee nut syrups topped with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. Mix this all together for a little Harry Potter-inspired treat. Try this same combination in a hot latte, too, for a great cold-weather delight.

Next time you order a cold drink, see if you can up-size it to a Trenta for 31 ounces of deliciousness.

Jamba Juice

Did you know you can make your own fruit drink combination at Jamba Juice? There are dozens of secret menu drinks just waiting to delight your taste buds.

Take for example the Pineapple Dream Machine featuring pineapple juice, soy milk, lime sherbet and frozen yogurt. You can also customize the Dream Machine in any number of flavors like orange, lemon and raspberry.

Other popular drinks are the Gummy Bears in red, pink, green, white and even chocolate. Dreaming of a beachy escape? Try the Piña Colada or the Pacific Passion.

Simply ask if your favorite Jamba Juice employee knows how to make these tasty concoctions and you’ll be sipping away soon.

Chick-fil-A

Yes, even the popular Chick-fil-A features a handful of hidden menu items sure to become favorites.

If you enjoy a little kick to your chicken, request that your Spicy Chicken Sandwich be topped with Buffalo sauce.

If you enjoy Chick-fil-A’s “ice dream” as much as I do, you will love the Blueberry Cheesecake Milkshake. If your nearest location serves Blueberry Cheesecake, simply ask them to blend that into a vanilla milkshake for you. Delish! If the cheesecake isn’t available, then be sure to order a Root Beer Float.

McDonald’s

Believe it or not, even McDonald’s has a few hidden menu options. Some of these, however, are of the DIY nature. In other words, you buy the traditional items off the menu and build your own amazing creation.

One of those DYI items combines the cheeseburger tastiness of the McDouble with the crispy chicken of the McChicken. Slide that McChicken between those two patties and you’ve created a great, hefty $2 lunch!

Next time you’re craving a little chicken for breakfast, order the Chicken McGriddle. Or if you’ve arrived at McDonald’s just after the breakfast cutoff, but still crave a McMuffin, try ordering the Mc10:35 which features a traditional McMuffin with the addition of the cheesy McDouble patties.

Did you know you could request a side of Big Mac Sauce? Dip your fries in that sauce for a delicious, salty snack.

Next time you order a Big Mac, ask to swap out the usual patties for the larger Quarter Pounder patties, creating the McKinley Mac.

Rumor has it

Talk around town is that there are several local restaurants like Sammy’s, Rocco’s Wings and Tacos, and other popular joints that also offer hidden menu options. Next time you’re craving a shake or taco or other bite of food, slyly ask if they have any secret items that they recommend. You could soon be in their Top Secret club!
