Got Cravings? Satisfy entree, sweet-tooth needs at joined-at-the-lip diners
Anybody remember that old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercial — you know, the one where two people are walking in opposite directions around a corner and bump into each other serendipitously combining their individual chocolate and peanut butter cravings into one luscious combination?
Well, there’s a similar double-dip combo at play when it comes to local dining — and what’s even better, the two locations are literally right around the corner from each other in Pleasant Grove, making potential collisions between customers possible.
Cravings Bistro and Cravings Alisha’s Cupcakes are owned by twin sisters Angela Wilson and Alisha Nuttall, respectively. Now, we’re not suggesting that you get a delectable Better Than What cupcake at Alisha’s and then dip it into the divine Tomato Basil Soup offered at the bistro. No, the type of combination we’re talking about simply involves making two stops and getting the best of both worlds when it comes to delicious entrees and mouth-watering desserts.
It is especially easy when you get the kind of text on your phone like we did Saturday advertising a “Conference Special” that would earn you 20 percent off your dining tab if you showed a receipt from the cupcakery. They could just have easily called it the “Godfather Special,” because this was an offer we could not refuse.
We had previously reviewed the Cravings bistro at its original American Fork location, but it switched to new roomier digs in Pleasant Grove a while ago. As such, we’d been meaning to check out the new space for some time. The combo offer made even more perfect sense in that we were celebrating a birthday that day, and so a handful of out-of-this-world cupcakes were able to replace previous plans for a cake.
We stopped by the cupcake shop first and were overwhelmed at the variety and choices. It took us a good 10 minutes of back-and-forth discussion before settling on an order. Our favorite choices included the Almond Joy, Better Than What, the Carameled Apple (yes, literally there were little apple bits in the middle of the cupcake and they were outrageously good), and the … wait for it … Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Believe us when we say if you can’t find a flavor to suit you then it’s a you problem.
And this might have been the sweetest smelling building we have visited in a long time. But don’t just take our word for it. Take the word of an anxious 8-year-old (or so) female customer who was walking up the sidewalk to the shop with her father as we were heading out the door with our bounty of sweetness.
“I can almost smell Alisha’s from here,” she gushed, with a big smile on her face.
There must be something about the dual Cravings threat that elicits spontaneous declarations from customers because a similar thing happened a short while later while we were sitting at our table at the bistro. There we were minding our own business when off to our left there was a sudden loud moan that escaped the lips of a fortysomething-year-old woman.
“Oh my heck!,” she exclaimed. “That is soooo good.”
Our initial inclination was to retort, “I’ll have what she’s having!” — but we had already placed our order at the counter, and we weren’t sure she’d seen that movie.
Having previously written about some of the food at Cravings, we were determined to try totally different offerings. In that quest we were mostly successful. There was literally no way we could avoid ordering the Tomato Basil Soup. Since the first time we tried this nectar of the Gods, we have been attempting to find a worthy competitor at restaurants across Utah Valley. While there have been some very delicious alternatives, we were reminded Saturday that the Tomato Basil at Cravings is still in a league of its own.
For those unaware, Cravings is mostly a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant — and the wide array of selections are dazzling. Things that one might never consider adding to a grilled cheese are everyday selections at Cravings.
Having previously been wowed by the ABC and The Gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, this time we branched out to something that was equally over the top: The Gooey 6 Cheese. It might be cheating a tad to limit it to just six cheeses. Oh, it still has cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, Swiss, pepper jack and Muenster cheeses all melted into a gooey taste of heaven inside its grilled-to-perfection French bread exterior. But the bread itself is encrusted with Parmesan, adding even more cheese flavor, if it were possible. We loved this sandwich!
After that we also sampled the French Dip and Thanksgiving sandwiches. They were also quite delicious.
We took a flier on the October Special offering: The Elvis Presley. It combines many things we love like peanut butter, bananas, honey and candied bacon. But somehow this overall combination didn’t quite work for us — although it was worth a try.
Oh, and lest we forget, a special shout out is deserved for the flavored lemonades at Cravings — which are all freshly squeezed after you place your order. Our raspberry lemonade with a splash of vanilla flavoring was delightful. And you could clearly taste the freshness.
One of the highlights of the previous Cravings location was its funky charm. One of the detriments was its tight quarters. The new location took care of the latter — as it is quite roomy and well spaced out, enabling it to handle many more customers comfortably. (And the restaurant was bustling Saturday afternoon.)
So whether you go for the wide selection of grilled cheese sandwiches, the Tomato Basil soup, the fresh flavored lemonades, or take a small detour for outlandish cupcakes, these two eateries should have all your Cravings covered.
