Pleasant Grove couple on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’

By Staff | Oct 20, 2014

Pleasant Grove residents Steve and Rachel McMurtrey appeared on ABC’s “Shark Tank” last Friday night. Their business, Jungle Jumparoo, was the first one featured on the show’s Friday episode. “Shark Tank” features hopeful entrepreneurs pitching their businesses to a panel of accomplished businesspeople, and, while the panel thought the McMurtrey’s product had potential, there were too many hang-ups for any of them to invest.

“We were very nervous and excited at this same time,” Steve McMurtrey told the Daily Herald. “It’s a big unknown. It’s the first time they’ve seen the product, and seen you — they know nothing about you before you open your mouth. You think a lot about how someone is going to perceive it for the first time. It’s hard to prepare for it.”

The Jungle Jumparoo is a toy for children. It features a pillar of multicolored metal bars standing within a large inflated inner tube — pitched as a portable, all-season, safer alternative to trampolines. The husband-and-wife duo have been pitching the Jumparoo full time for the past year, and have already sold more than 1,000. While the “Shark Tank” panel didn’t invest in the product, they did give the McMurtrey’s a wealth of good feedback that they’ve tried to incorporate.

“We were there to get a deal — we weren’t just there because we wanted the PR air time. So that was disappointing,” Steve said. “(But) it’s been beneficial to our company. It fueled that fire. These people know what they’re talking about, they give great advice, so we’re going to take that advice and run with it.”
