Drive-Thru Gourmet: Sweet dreams are packed into Denny’s Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast
This week I reached out for a plate of Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast, new for the dreaded limited time only at “America’s Diner” — Denny’s, with 1,700 restaurants keeping the light on 24/7.
Denny’s, our largest chain of full-service, sit-down family diners, joined forces with cable station TNT to bring Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast to the light of day — and all night. This melting-pot dish won first place on an episode of “On the Menu,” a cooking game show hosted by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and TV home handyman Ty Pennington. Emeril can make some incredible homemade fudge; Pennington is, uh, eye candy?
Here’s the Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast breakdown: whipped cream cheese and warm apple filling tucked between two thick slices of French toast. The whole thing is topped with a drizzle of cinnamon sauce.
And the line between breakfast and dessert has been crossed. Actually, not just crossed, but smudged out forever. This dish is sweeter than a pillowcase filled with Halloween candy. And that’s after you throw out the candy corn — the scourge of the entire candy industry.
Total calories in Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast: 750. Fat grams: 33. Sodium: 1,160 mg. Carbs: 107 g. Dietary fiber: 3 g. Protein: 21 g. This dish comes with a side of crispy hash browns laced with crumbled chorizo and onions. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $7.99.
For an extra two bucks, Denny’s will throw in two eggs any style, plus bacon or sausage. It’s a pretty filling, well-rounded breakfast for chilly fall mornings. Meanwhile, right around the corner (sing along), it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. And Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast is starting to look a lot like IHOP.
Denny’s is picking up on Pizza Hut’s trick of hiding the good stuff: The cream cheese and apple pie goop are stuffed between slices of French toast. When will the chains come clean and let us see what’s up … or inside? Pretty soon, a chicken shack — say, KFC — will lose its mind and use fried chicken breasts instead of bread to cover up its plain old ham ‘n’ cheese sandwich. OK, bad example. Send in the men in white lab coats with butterfly nets.
Denny’s Apple Danish Stuffed French Toast is the stuff sweet dreams are made of. It’s packing cream cheese icing, apple pie innards, super-thick French toast and, just for kicks — Emeril is known for kicking things up a notch — there’s sticky cinnamon sauce on top. What’s not to love in this concoction?
Absolutely everything goes together and rockets a sugar surge to the pleasure zone of your brain, with just a dash of spice from the cinnamon. Way to go, Emeril — good choice. And Ty, you’re not supposed to put a spatula and a soup ladle in a tool belt. What is he doing on this show, anyway?
The only thing missing from Denny’s Apple Danish French Toast is a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Oh, waiter! Do I have to think of everything around here?
