Moochie’s magic: Meatballs and More an apt description for new Lehi restaurant
My family and I felt right at home walking into the new Moochie’s Meatballs and More location in Lehi this past weekend.
That’s because Moochie’s set up shop in the old Winger’s building — which had been one of our favorite dining spots for years. So, you could say that we were well acquainted with the location, and had many good dining experiences there.
Luckily we were able to make some new memories at Moochie’s — which opened in mid-February. We had been hearing a lot about crazy, busy lines since the restaurant opened and were bracing for delays on our Friday night visit, but luckily things proved to be pretty calm. Perhaps this was a result of many people still being out of town for spring break.
There are menus to your right as you walk into Moochie’s, so you can pick one up and immediately begin perusing your plentiful sub and salad options, which, along with meatballs of course, are the restaurant’s primary calling cards.
You place your order at the front register and then pick out your own seating arrangements. The main dining room and a second room are both fairly large, and there is both booth and table seating available. The rooms offer plenty of space, and have an open feel. It was nice to avoid that tables-packed-too-close-together vibe that is often the cast at other restaurants.
The interior had a snazzy metallic feel, prompting our 17-year-old to exclaim, “I like places like this — they’re just kind of casual and fun!”
And that was before the food had even arrived. We were certainly off to a good start.
As for the food, we discovered that there is much to love about Moochie’s. The Philly Cheesesteak we sampled was the clear star of the evening. The “authentic” style cheeseteak (it’s all in the style of cheese, according to the menu) came loaded with thinly sliced ribeye steak. When we say loaded we are not exaggerating. Many cheesesteaks we’ve had over the years are heavy on all the other ingredients and light on the steak. That was certainly not the case here.
In addition to the steak, the fantastic sub came with grilled onions and American cheese. There are extra options available for add-ons (for 50 cents to a $1 each depending on the size of the sandwich), including grilled mushrooms, roasted bell peppers, a style of cheese substitution and lettuce, tomato and mayo as one item. We added mushrooms and bell peppers, and it made for one scrumptious sandwich, that’s for sure.
We also sampled the Italian Deli and Pizza Steak sandwiches. The Italian Deli features salami, ham, roast beef and provolone cheese on a deli-style sub. The Pizza Steak features ribeye steak, with grilled onions, pepperoni, black olives, mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce, which made for an interesting mix of flavors.
Another sandwich that we could not resist was the Sausage and Peppers, which was augmented with grilled onions and provolone cheese. This was another favorite.
The Spaghetti and Meatballs was pretty straightforward — except we would give bonus points for the meatballs, which were also a highlight. We made a mental note that on a future visit we will need to try the signature Meatball Sub.
Where Moochie’s really ratcheted things up for our family was in some truly stupendous side orders. Both parents and kids went to town on the Fried Ravioli, Fries and Onion Rings. We loved all of these immensely, and things were spiced up a bit by dipping the fries and rings in the appropriately titled house “Freakin’ Fabulous Fry Sauce.” It was not false advertising by any stretch.
Moochie’s also offers an array of salads, which we didn’t try on this initial visit, and desserts, which we were too stuffed to sample. Maybe we’ll get to those on that followup visit!
