Drive-Thru Gourmet: Taco Bell Crunchwrap Sliders offer big value

By Ken Hoffman - | Feb 5, 2015

This week I reached out for a Beefy Cheddar Crunchwrap Slider, part of the new line of Crunchwrap Sliders at America’s No. 1 Tex-Mex lunch wagon, Taco Bell, with 6,500 restaurants from border to border.

“Sliders” originally referred to mini burgers, but now “sliders” can mean a smaller version of anything on the menu. In this case, it’s a pint-size version of Taco Bell’s popular Crunchwrap Supreme. It’s not really that small, though, so let’s say quart-size.

The Bell has unleashed three Crunchwrap Sliders: Beefy Cheddar, Spicy Chicken and BLT. Since Beefy Cheddar stands to be the standout, that’s where we’ll start.

Here’s the Beefy Cheddar Crunchwrap Slider breakdown: seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese sauce, cheddar cheese and Fritos chips in a warm flour tortilla.

Total calories: 410. Fat grams: 19. Sodium: 960 mg. Carbs: 46 g. Dietary fiber: 4 g. Protein: 14 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $1.

Beefy Cheddar is the beefiest Crunchwrap Slider in terms of weight. It’s more than half the heft of a full-on Crunchwrap Supreme for about one-third the price. Any way you crunch the Crunchwrap numbers, that’s a bargain.

The ingredients are typical Taco Bell fare: seasoned ground beef, and a lot of gloppy cheese. Fritos chips put the “crunch” in “Crunchwrap.” Beefy Cheddar is the least crunchy of the Sliders. Blame it on the cheese overload.

Here’s the deal with the Beefy Cheddar Crunchwrap Slider: It’s a deal. You’re getting 5.3 ounces of fill-up for a buck. Big appetites can get more than their money’s worth by ordering three or four, or even five (for competitive eaters only) of these, and still come out ahead of a burger combo at rival drive-thrus.

The Spicy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider has shredded chicken, creamy chipotle sauce and Fritos chips. The BLT Crunchwrap Slider has bacon bits, avocado ranch sauce and Fritos chips. Both are audibly crunchier than the Beefy Cheese.

The BLT Crunchwrap Slider is something new and different from the same old, same old Taco Bell flavor chest. As with most things at the Bell, I would have liked more bacon. You can never get enough “B” in anything “BLT.”

One warning sign: These Sliders are a salty lick. If you eat three, you’re downing almost 3,000 mg of sodium. Just so you know.

Here’s the bright side of sliders for the brainiacs in Taco Bell’s research and development: Anything can be made slider-style. Less may be more on the bottom line if sliders catch on with women and kids, who aren’t typically Taco Bell’s target audience. And you know that anything that sells at Taco Bell will sell better when Doritos chips make their entrance. They’re on their way.

Starting at $4.32/week.
