We’ve all heard the best things come in small packages, right?

That sweet sentiment was reaffirmed recently when I popped into a small cafe on State Street in Orem.

This little building, home of the Roll Up Cafe, easily identified by its larger-than-life owl and mural on the exterior, may be quaint and seemingly small, but the menu items are overflowing with delicious flavor.

While I’ve had quite a few tasty dessert crepes over the years, I really hadn’t discovered a satisfying savory crepe. That is until I ordered a large to-go order from the Roll Up Cafe.

Wanting to grab something different for dinner, recently, I decided to order a selection of items from the Roll Up Cafe and then take goods home for the family to enjoy. No one was disappointed!

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of options at the crepe restaurant — salads, soups, panini’s and even a variety of hot cocoa combinations, too. I decided to order a couple of salads, crepinis (savory crepes) and paninis.

The Wild Berry Bunch salad, filled with grilled chicken, almonds, mixed berries, asiago cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette was quickly claimed by my 15-year-old and promptly declared delicious.

While I had originally selected the California Lovin’ salad for myself — grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, tomato, asiago cheese and cilantro lime ranch — I couldn’t resist mixing up a couple of the sandwiches and paninis. So I actually sampled half of the Ham and Triple Cheese Melt crepini and the Honey Bacon Club panini.

The crepini was perfectly packed with three different cheeses and smoked ham. Dipped into the tomato basil sauce, the sandwich was a wonderful combination of flavors and textures.

The Honey Bacon Club was a perfectly grilled panini filled with ham, bacon, muenster cheese, honey mustard and tomatoes. The sweet honey flavor was the perfect complement to both the ham and the bacon. Another tasty success.

Following my lead, my husband also tried a little of this and a little of that from the selection I’d brought home. He really enjoyed the Turkey Bacon Avocado crepini with its chunks of turkey, bacon, cheese and tomato and avocado slices. He also enjoyed the other half of the Honey Bacon Club panini. He may also have helped me nibble on that fresh California Lovin’ salad, too.

Time for dessert!

When ordering the dessert crepes I got a huge kick out of the clever names — clearly geared toward the cafe’s late-night college-age crowd. With names like True Love, Summer Fling, Blind Date, The Bachelorette, Movin’ On, More to Love, Awkward First Date, The Break Up, Secret Admirer, The Tinder, Speed Dating and so on, it is pretty clear that many relationships have been launched, or sadly failed, over a delicious dessert crepe. (There is even The Proposal crepe — two sweet crepes and a diamond ring for just $3,000.)

After a fun chuckle, and a few flashbacks from my single days, I ordered up the Summer Fling filled with Nutella and Strawberries, The Bachelorette with its raspberries and white chocolate and the Movin’ On with berry cheesecake and mixed berries.

While I would typically dig in to the raspberry and white chocolate crepe (I do love white chocolate), I opted for the berry-filled Movin’ On. I was not disappointed. Not only was it incredibly delicious, light and flavorful, it was presented beautifully with the fillings piled in the middle and the crepe tucked around the filling like a fluted tart or galette.

The other two crepes were quickly gobbled up by my husband and daughter, without even at chance to taste test. So I assume they, too, were delicious.

The Roll Up Cafe is a popular late-night hangout, especially with a small performance stage ready to host scheduled performers on the weekends or open mic nights every Tuesday. Recently announcing new owners, the staff is prepping to extend the hours of the cafe and offer additional menu items, including breakfast, making it an even more accessible dining option.

Whether you are heading out on a blind date, hoping to catch some new talented troubadour or really just wanting a great, hot panini or fresh salad, the Roll Up Cafe in Orem is a great open, proving that wonderful things really do come in small packages.
