Lunch Ladies: Sushi Burrito Utah #2
Some pairings might initially sound odd, but are actually quite perfectly delicious.
Apples and peanut butter. French fries and frosties. Grapes and cheese. Fritos and milk chocolate chips. Cottage cheese and pineapple. Radishes and chocolate milk. Grilled cheese and raspberry jam. Chocolate-covered cinnamon bears. Bacon and, well, most anything.
On the other hand, some foods are combined into intriguing combinations that leave you a little mystified. The infamous turducken. Spam on a donut. Cauliflower pizza crust with tofu sauce. Lasagna made with beans and salsa. Mashed Brussels sprouts with parmesan. Bologna casserole. And numerous others that just make you do the slightest head tilt coupled with an, “Hmmm, must be an acquired taste.”
Well, when we first heard the term “Sushi Burrito,” we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Would this be another unexpected delicious pairing or a unique food concept that would leave our taste buds a little more bemused than satisfied? Only one way to find out; we would have to check out the recently opened restaurant, Sushi Burrito Utah, on 300 South in Provo!
We had heard of the restaurant, Sushi Burrito Utah, in Salt Lake City, and our curiosity had only been growing ever since it opened up a second location in Utah County. We decided the time had come to finally see how this so-called sushi burrito actually worked. So, extremely curious and particularly eager, we headed over to the restaurant ready to give it an adventurous whirl!
We entered the small restaurant, surprised we hadn’t really noticed it in the surrounding shopping area. We were greeted by friendly staff, who answered some of our questions as we surveyed the hanging menu. Making a decision took us slightly longer than usual, since so many of the options were highly tempting. There were of course raw sushi options, but also other non-fish cooked-meat options, as well as bento boxes, and various sides to choose from.
We finally made our selections and sat down. Here is what the Lunch Ladies went with:
Gabby: Typhoon Burrito $8.99
This amazing sushi-filled burrito starts with a burrito shell made of an outermost layer of seaweed, then a supple layer of rice, giving a solid base to hold the insides of whatever roll you select. The Typhoon option I chose comes with Albacore tuna, crab salad, cucumber, lettuce, avocado and pickled ginger. There is also garlic, spicy mayo, and my favorite sushi flavor, eel sauce mixed throughout as well. The burrito is conveniently cut in half for convenience. I was amazed how well the fresh fish and other tasty ingredients were chunked throughout the burrito allowing me to enjoy all the wonderful flavors throughout my meal. Such a creative idea, and I can’t wait to go back!
Jennette: Shrimp Lover (spicy) $7.99
I have grown to love sushi, so when I heard of a new restaurant in Provo called Sushi Burrito; I had to see what it was all about. I decided to read up online about my options and decided that there were too many choices to decide from so I would just have to go with whatever struck my fancy when I got there. I went with the Shrimp Lover because I wanted something a little spicy. This burrito had tempura shrimp, purple cabbage, pickled daikon, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, sprouts, spicy mayo and Sriracha. These flavors combined to make the best burrito! All of the ingredients were evenly dispersed through the whole burrito making each bite quite delicious. Sushi Burrito does sell Coke products but it didn’t have Diet Coke, so I just had water instead.
Sylvia: Combo Tempura $4.99; Shrimp Tempura $4.99; Seaweed Salad $3.99
Opting for some of the non-burrito choices on the menu, my seaweed salad with sesame seeds and rice wine vinegar was so fresh and made me feel a little better about my other choices that were deep fried. The tempura appetizers had generous amounts of carrots, squash (some variety that was orange with green rind), and shrimp which were dipped in a nice light tempura batter that was served nice and crispy with a sweet soy dipping sauce on the side. All very tasty; very tasty indeed.
Shellie: Vegas Burrito $8.99
I have been very curious about Sushi Burrito since I heard the buzz about its first location in SLC. One of the great things about sushi is that you get all the flavors of the roll in each bite, so I wasn’t sure how a burrito-sized sushi roll would work. I have to say, that I was pleasantly surprised! After looking over the tempting menu, I chose the Vegas Burrito. It had fresh salmon, cream cheese-based crab salad, with avocado, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Yummy! The flavors blended perfectly. I’ll order it again for sure. It’s a different eating experience than traditional sushi, but I enjoyed it just as much.
We were definitely glad we indulged our curiosity and tried out Sushi Burrito. It not only turned out to be a great pairing, it was one these Lunch Ladies will unquestionably be having again … maybe as often as yogurt and granola.
