Isn’t it funny how one day to the next, your level of activity cannot be that different, and yet for some reason your appetite can have grown 10 times in size and had offspring, which then run around the corners of your stomach in every direction? Their unceasing laps pushing and stretching the walls, as if it were Silly Putty, until you feel like there is such a gaping hole, that you think there is no way it could possibly be filled?

You don’t know what I am talking about? Let me try again. You wake up; you must have been running marathons in your sleep, because you already feel so carnivorous you think you could eat your pillow at day’s first light. Yet you are so amazed, because you really were just as productive or just as lazy as the day before.

Metabolism, hormones, biology, fiber, food science, it all comes together in a fascinating jumble, where you just think no matter what you do, you might seriously remain hungry.

Now … have you ever had one of THOSE days?

Hopefully we are on the same page now, if not, if you are somehow above those insatiable appetite kind of days, well I just have one thing to say to you: In the immortal words of Chris Farley’s beloved character Matt Foley, “La dee frickin da” to you, my friend.

But in all serious, if you are like the majority of the population who has those days from time to time, you need a restaurant recommendation that can genuinely satisfy, with food options you can sink your teeth into that just might fill that black hole abyss, known as your stomach.

Having recently had one of those days, the Lunch Ladies would like to offer you a suggestion — Wallabys Smokehouse.

We went, we conquered, and here is what we ordered:

Sylvia: Shrimp on the Barbie $10.50

Yes, this was as good as it sounds. The shrimp were grilled to perfection. The meal came with two sides — I chose the Cucumber Salad which was sliced cucumbers that had this sweet, vinegar taste (yum!), and chips (fries) that came with a barbecue fry sauce (also yum!). A roll with cinnamon butter also was included, and I was thinking I wouldn’t like the butter, but it was also delish. Can you tell I licked my platter clean?

Jennette: BBQ Pork Sanger with Chips $7.75, Large Drink $2.49

My favorite dish to order at barbeque joints is a Pulled Pork Sandwich. That is what I ordered today. This awesome Sanger (sandwich) was served with fresh, delicious coleslaw right on top of the pork, just the way it should be. The coleslaw had nice bite-sized carrots and a tangy sauce. It was the perfect combination. I added some more bbq sauce from the array of sauces that are offered from the self-serve counter. My only complaint was that I ran out of sandwich before I could try more bbq sauces. The chips (fries) were nice and crispy and served with a tangy bbq fry sauce. I almost panicked when I saw only a Pepsi machine, but don’t let that deceive you. Wallabys does have Diet Coke, much to my relief!

Gabby: Tri-Tip Steak Lunch Special $7.25

So apparently my love for potatoes came shining through without so much as a second thought. I did not originally realize the daily lunch special comes with your choice of two sides. So when asked what I wanted for sides, I quickly said chips, but when told I got two sides, I quickly chose Smashers without any hesitation, not even realizing that would give me two sides of potatoes. Did I regret it? Not for a second! I opted to get them “loaded” for a little extra cost, well worth it! These mashed potatoes came with cheese, bacon, sour cream and green onions. The chips were tasty, crisp fries, which I thoroughly enjoyed dipping in Wallabys’ signature fry sauce that was a little sweet and a little tangy. I passed off the roll portion of my meal to Lyndsi, but of course savored every bite of tender, flavorful tri-tip steak all by myself! Absolutely delicious! As we were leaving I noticed the menu said to ask about gluten-free options. Next time I’ll have to remember that, just to make sure I avoid any contamination that I can.

Lyndsi: Aussie Burrito $7.50

Barbecue sauce is really the reason I go to barbecue joints. I am not a huge fan of just eating plain meat — I need some sauce and toppings. So today my sauce vessel at Wallabys was the Aussie Burrito. It was a tomato basil tortilla stuffed with black beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream and I chose pulled pork as the meat. It was the perfect thing to use to try all the many sauce options they had. I really enjoyed the raspberry, zesty, and my favorite was the Tasmanian devil. It had the perfect amount of kick. The other Lunch Ladies had a great time watching me pour different sauces on each bite of burrito, but I didn’t care, I was in sauce heaven.

Well, it was unanimous: Wallabys was a definite win in the Lunch Ladies’ book! We were stuffed, satisfied and our cravings were fulfilled. You’ll have to check it out and let us know what you think. Perhaps you too will be in sauce heaven!
